Mitt Romney's Father Murdered Deaf Guy

Governor George Romney mishandled the Detroit race riot all over the place which he repeatedly asked the U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson to send in the federal troops. Johnson refused to do upon the request of Governor George Romney. Johnson strongly disagreed with Governor George Romney why the U.S. Government should send in the federal troops to squelch the widespread race riots all over Detroit. Romney pointed out the U.S. law - the U.S. Insurrection Law of the 1807. Romney's Michigan National Guards failed to contain the riot protesters which the Detroit police department was well-known for their own police brutality. President Johnson finally sent the federal troops after getting Governor George Romney to sign the legal agreement about the Detroit race riot got out of control.

Roy Delco Banks, the 46 years old African American deaf guy walked to the bus from his house. The Michigan National Guard shot him behind the back without any warnings. The National Guard mistakenly thought that Banks was an escaped looter. The neighbors and relatives disputed the claims about Banks ran with another guy from the store which the citywide curfew was imposed til 5:30am. Roy Banks rose at 4am for going to work. Roy and his wife owned the house. Roy Banks got hit in the right groin and died from bullet wounds on Monday, August 15th, 1967 at 4:30pm.

The shooting of Roy Banks led to more inflamed riots all over Detroit area which people were very angry about an innocent man being shot to death. The Detroit race riots continued over days which was recorded as the "second" worst urban riot in the history of the United States of America - real destructive and deadliest - 800 dead and 2,000 buildings destroyed.

Decrying the "tragic" conflict, he urged "a sound peace in South Vietnam at an early time." Thus Romney disavowed the war and reversed himself from his earlier stated belief that the war was "morally right and necessary".[139]"

Governor George Romney never bothered to revisit Roy Delco Banks' unfortunate incident like assigning the commission to find out who the Michigan National Guard serviceman irresponsibly shot Banks to his slow and painful death. Gov. George Romney never visited the widow of Roy Delco Banks to pay the respect to Roy or provided any monetary compensation.

Roy Delco Banks' educational background and job profession were largely unknown where he attended the school for the deaf or held the job.

In the memory of Roy Delco Banks and his loved ones and friends, we ought to create the permanent honor for this innocent victim undeservedly got shot without any formal warnings. Deaf Americans are much aware of this very common police tactic and practice for them to shoot and ask questions later.

40th Anniversary of Brutal Murder of the Teacher of the Deaf Inspired the 1970s Hollywood Film

In the meantime, the 40th anniversary of brutal and senseless murder of the teacher of the deaf, Ms. Roseann Quinn in the Upper West Side on January 1, 1972, still prevails today with the bestseller novel and Hollywood film with the title of "Looking for Mr. Goodbar". Ms. Quinn taught the eight years old deaf kids at the St. Joseph School for the Deaf in Bronx area (New York City). Her body was discovered on January 3, 1973. The New York Daily Times newspaper ran an article about Quinn last January 2011.

The 1970s film with the casting of Diane Keaton and very young Richard Gere which boosted Keaton's film career. Actor Richard Gere did not get the full recognizance until he appeared in the leading role for "Days of Heaven".

The DPN protesters marched all the way from the Kendall Green campus to the Mayflower hotel on the Florida Avenue, Northeast to Connecticut Avenue, Northwest. The DPN protesters demanded to speak with the board members about the erroneous selection of Zinser as a new Gallaudet president against the wishes of Gallaudet community and alumnus.

If J. Edgar Hoover was still in the control of the FBI Headquarter leadership back in 1988. Hoover surely instructed the FBI agents and DC police to shoot down the DPN protesters right away on the scene. Hoover vigorously opposed the existence of American Sign Language (ASL) along with the AGBell Association.

I do not know if this MSNBC video refers to the so-called special privilege for deaf people getting the front row seats without paying any exclusive seating cost in demand.

I am sure that too many hearing people resent such idea of seeing "able-bodied" deaf individuals come in and grab the front seat rows without paying any kind of "supply and demand" prices.

Of course, deaf people need to get in the front seat rows due to the visual means for keeping up with the American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters.

No questions about deaf people with visible CI devices on their heads caused such resentment among hearing people asking themselves - "Why deaf people with CI or digital hearing aids help these people such ability to hear and get the front seat privileges?"

You could see how and why the CI (cochlear implant) and expensive digital hearing aids footed by the taxpayers and health insurance companies really hurt deaf people as a homogeneous group and cause such societal backlashes against us in general.

CI, digital hearing aids and the influxes of various communication methods from SEE, LOVE, PSE (Language Contact), Cued Speech and AVT created by audists as a sole purpose of dividing our deaf community into the Tower of Babel with communications and unnatural & artificial devices to weaken our cohesive standings for political, social and economic power.

First of all, Ken Davis NEVER, NEVER, NEVER claim to be a journalist. Davis is purely a news jockey to deliver his ponficiations (opinion, commentary) which he have much right as other vloggers and bloggers.

In the seas of Internet, there are too many unfiltered news reportings like Perz Hilton, very influential news shaker or Matt Drudge with many inaccurate news reportings.

Deaf Newspaper.com NEVER, NEVER claimed to be the credible journalism or newsreporting. Ken Davis just use "NEWSPAPER" as a reminder of many fine deaf newspapers and "Little Family" tablets among deaf schools until 1950s.

Newspaper itself as a term meant printing news on cheap paper sheets. Ken Davis's "Deaf Newspaper.com have to do nothing with the existence of newsprint paper sheets. His commentary/op-ed comes with the use of visual materials. Ken Davis do not hide behind the anonymous blog aggregator like Gina Sutton aka Candy. Ken came openly with his face and
ASL signings. Deaf America know that Ken Davis's news vlog postings really are not "newspaper".

Ken Davis would be properly called "columnist" or "op-ed" to share his thoughts. Davis's interpretation of the "AB 2072" coming from his own GUT FEELING what the AB 2072 bill really meant to him in personal way. Davis could see what the AB 2072 bill would lead to the next thing like the systematic path to quicker and easier implementation of getting deaf child to be cochlearized implanted thru the so-called gatekeepers' titled influences (audiologists and AVT greedy carpetbaggers).

From what many deaf people across America get the first impression of the "AB 2072" bill after learning their experience with the "Early Hearing Detection Intervention" federal law known as EDHI.

At first, the Deaf America welcome the EDHI with open arms or no objections. Deaf Americans finally realized what the EDHI was really all about widening the path for the medical community to put the cochlear implants on many deaf babies and children as they could get on our deaf people.

Deaf Americans originally thought that the EDHI will be very helpful for parents to identify their deaf children and get them educated at early age, but they see the EDHI differently. More and more and more deaf babies and children ended up getting the CI, not introducing them to the world of deaf education. Deaf Americans had enough with the misleading intentions of so-called laws.

So the Deaf California rose against the AB 2072 bill since the deaf community NEVER got consulted on any legislative bills which greatly affected them as a social and linguistic community.

Deaf California and the Deafhood movement do NOT lose their face at all. They done very brillant political brinkmanships to defeat the AB 2072 bill by adding the lead metals on bill itself to sink and get vetoed. They were against the AB 2022 bill all the way while Barry Sewell, Mike McConnell, Candy and others flip-flopped on that bill through the whole process.

From the beginning, the "California Coalition" sleathly pushed for the AB 2072 bill thru Rep. Tony Mendoza without any inputs from the Deaf California community. The AB 2027 supporters among Barry Sewell, Mike McConnell, Candy and others along with the California Coalition GOT
EGGS ON THEIR FACES in the end, NOT the AB 2072 opponents.

Deaf California and Deafhood supporters were brilliantly played the California Legislature and Governor "Terminator" like the "Brer Rabbit and the Tar Baby" folkfore.

Are Deaf American Children Being An Experimental Rat?

More and more U.S. government's past experiments on human beings are revealed lately.

Worst of all, the U.S. government conducted very unethical and illegal human experiments outside the country on unsuspected individuals without their consents.

New Captioning Law in Maryland!

This new landmark law in Maryland give much-needed rights to deaf people in the public area.

So the providers via public area could not deny any deaf individual upon their request to turn on the captions, ex. bars, coffeehouses, resturants and other public places.

*Waving hands* to the Deaf Marylanders for their hard work and effort to make this new law happen.

We finally are treated as equal citizens like everyone else in the public area!

Mike McConnell surely will criticize this new law as some kind of big-government regulation shove down the providers via public area. Or seen it as a costly incentives for business to accompany the needs of deaf patrons or customers?

Why We Would Not Worry About CA Legislative Override

UPDATED FLASH--AB 2072 Vetoed by California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger

According to an authoritative source within the California Senate staff, it is still technically possible that the California Legislature could override Gov. Schwarzenegger's veto of AB 2072. However, this is highly *unlikely* to happen, since there has not been a successful attempt to override a governor's veto in California since 1979.

Theoretically, the Legislature has 60 days to override the current governor's veto of AB 2072, which means that the last possible day it could be overridden is Sunday, November 28, 2010.

Two days later on November 30, 2010, the Legislature will adjourn "sine die", which means that the session will be completely finished, and no bills at all from that session could be overridden after that. Legislators would only have the option of reintroducing a bill in January 2011, at which time it would be considered a new bill and be given a different number.

The last bill to be overridden in California was AB 570, titled: "An act to amend Section 1643 of the Insurance Code, relating to insurance". That bill was originally introduced by Assemblymember Pappen on Feb. 16, 1979 and was passed out of the Legislature on May 25, 1979, then vetoed by Governor Jerry Brown on June 9, 1979, the same Jerry Brown who is currently running again for governor of California, 27 years after he left the office in 1983.

The Legislature successfully overrode the governor's veto on July 12, 1979.Previous to AB 580 in 1979, there was another bill successfully overridden in 1979 which was SB 91, originally introduced by Senator Al Alquist (the husband of current Senator Elaine Alquist).Previous to that, SB 155 was successfully overridden in 1977.

When you enter the VineLink and type '43342' in the Offender ID search box and find a mugshot of Ridor. However it does not say anything why he is in jail. I really could not wait to see Ridor being dragged into the prison cell for guys with HIV to tear out his hole (rectum) for what he done to me and others! That explains about Ridor being arrested for violation of suspended sentence due to the recent domestic problem at his home. ASL Film's "Black Sand" Reviews & Tibidts

Mark Wood surely emerge as the Deaf "Oscar Micheaux" which Wood and the ASL Films Production brought us series of ASL-centered entertainment films from "Forget Me Not" to the latest film release, "Black Sand".

The recent film screening of "Black Sand" at the Model Secondary School for the Deaf (MSSD), Washington, DC as part of fundraising event for the MSSD Alumni Association this September 10th and 11th, 7pm. The MSSD auditorium was pretty packed.

The ASL Films production always support the organizations of the deaf across America by splitting 70 percent to 30 percent from ticket sales.

ASL Film's "Black Sand" was pretty entertaining film. Wanna see the film again!

RLMDEAF decide not to spoil the prospective viewers with any details or hints. Preferably let you, deaf audience to see the film first before we have the discussion forum about the ASL Film's "Black Sand".

The ASL Film's enclosed film synposis really enough for the would-be deaf viewers to get the whole idea what the film is all about.

Mark Wood, the film director and several cast members of "Black Sand" made their surprise appearance on the MSSD Auditorium to field the questions about the film after the film screening.

The first question was from me, RLM about whether Chris B. Corrigian really became a professional actor. Chris replied "Yes, I had been performed the stage works before attending Gallaudet. I recently graduated from Gallaudet and went back to my acting roots (phrase)".

Mark Woods answered an question about how long to complete the pre-film and post-film production. "7 months".

Someone asked Mark Wood about the film script writing. Woods wanted to do something different with the real complicated storyline and character development (loose phrase), instead
of spoon-feeding the audience throughout the entire film.

RLM asked another question about one female character with interesting physical feature, especially the human hair whether it was natural or being done with special makeup. The deaf actress replied "The makeup person helped with the character image".

Other questions aimed at Mark Wood and cast members. Chris Corrigan shared his delightful experience with the hearing guy, who appeared in "Black Sand" as a caretaker. How the hearing male cast changed dramatically from the wooden person to "largely expressive person with easy time of doing the communication gestures. The deaf actress told how wonderful for the hearing lady being truly shy to the real delight to have her around the set. In the end, hearing lady played the housekeeper still shy about seeing herself on the film during the editing process.

The entire "Black Sand" cast members and production crew had a real wonderful time in Costa Rica during the filming.

RLM asked Mark Wood the direct question after the Q & A's session what will be his next film project. Wood replied "I do not know yet".

Look forward to more "ASL Film" production in near future! Mark Wood is definitely our "Oscar Micheaux"

Oh boy, the latest drama within California's "AB 2072 bill", the enclosed letter from the California Audiologist Association (CAA) to Rep. Tony Mendoza.

So you could see for yourself with your OWN EYES what the true colors of audiologists and the California Coalition are all about, especially the deaf detractors and naysayers and deaf traitors.

Jesus Christ, audiologists do not possess any college degree in Deaf Education or the Education of the Deaf (preferable term). They claimed to be an educational expert for deaf children. *rolling eyes in disbelief* NOTHING NEW ABOUT AUDIOLOGISTS in general!

There are interesting twists within the latest AB 2072 bill. The audiologist lobbying group are lobbying against the current AB 2072 bill to show the TRUE COLORS among the California Coalition. Those audiologists do NOT want to be restricted in any way to fatten their sale commissions for getting deaf babies and kids on the assembly line to be branded with CI.

Someone like Miss Kat's Parents, Gina Sutton aka Candy, Mike McConnell, Barry Sewell, Russell the Deaf Bunny and Eddie Raynon are really CLUELESS about the real purpose and intention why the AB 2072 bill introduce to the California Legislature.

Here is the e-mail exrpect from the Deaf California -

Assembly Rules has confirmed that they are expecting to find an interpreter for
tomorrow and are waiting for confirmation from the interpreting agency. 
Rene Bayardo (aide to Mendoza) states that 2072 will probably be voted on tomorrow
morning, with a high degree of probability, if the interpreter is confirmed. 
The audiologists assoc's lobby is probably attempting to sway members to vote no.

The recent California Senate voted 16 YES and 8 NO for the AB 2072 bill, but not fully known if the quorum being met or what.

Karen Kingrey told me that if the votes go up to 21 for YES. That might be possible for the passage of the AB 2072 bill. Only 24 out of 40 California Senators.

Several state senators repeatedly acknowledged "ASL" as a true language and part of the Deaf community.

If the AB 2072 bill get approved by the California State Senate. The bill will be on the desk of Governor Arnie, who is an Austrian (Austria) like Adolf Hitler, Austrian native himself.

Governor Arnie had the special friendship with the ex-Nazi murderer in the past. Many people questioned how possible for Arnie to say that he never seen such Nazi atriocities in his home country.

VP Dan Quayle's Son ,Ben Quayle Learned ASL in the 90s

Ben Quayle, the eldest son of the former Vice President Dan Quayle, currently run for the U.S. House of Representative seat in Arizona.

I completely forgot about Ben Quayle learned handful of ASL with some deaf postal workers at the U.S. Senate's own Post Office in the tunnels between the Russell and Dirksen Senate building in the early 1990s. I encountered the teenage Ben Quayle at that post office when I found out that someone from the post office did not pick up the mail pouch for an overnight mail. I had to take some fucking mail to the Senate post office distribution system to see that particular mail being sent out of the system.

One of the deaf postal employee eagerly introduced me to Ben Quayle. I replied "That is you, Dan's son working here as what I read from the Roll Call newspaper". He smiled and fingerspelled "B-E-N". I said "Nice to meet you!" That deaf employee and Ben playfully horseplayed after the near end of the workday with ASL signings.

I said to myself "Sheesh, VP Quayle got his teenage son working at the post office. Fine example of family connection and neoptism!"

I wonder whether Ben Quayle still know some ASL or not. Does Ben Quayle have a good impression of deaf people or knowledge of deaf people? I dunno know.

Ben Quayle have been in the a lot of news coverage lately since he ran to his mommy and daddy to tell the Republicans please stop slandering and bashing their own son.

I also never forgot how culturally backward VP Dan Quayle was with the Tim Burton's "Batman" film. Dan was totally shocked when he took Ben to see "Batman" and found the different Batman - more violent and sadistic than the campy Batman tv show in the 1960s.

Don't Dan Quayle keep up with the cultural and social events like Frank Miller's "Dark Knight" comic very popular in the late 1980s which Tim Burton's "Batman" film was largely based on?

Before going further with the original purpose of this blog posting in reaction to Candy's blog. The upcoming legal case involves with the legality of anonymous author/commentators to be illegal within the constitutional issue. We, the Americans will face the changed nature of Internet to forbade the "anonymous" author/commentators.

One online blogger wrote such "convincing" article about President Obama being a secret member of the gay sex club in Chicago. The major problem is the alias name of Russian journalist like Candy. (Will post the enclosure about Obama's so-called gay ravenous in Chicago by letting the older gentlemen done the fetallio on Obama's dingy in the end of this blog posting. Okay?) This article have been pretty dismissed by many people about the so-called credibility of sources and other stuff.)

Candy done again with the plucking of the AB 2072 opposition's outreach materials for the California Senate not to vote on the AB 2072 bill, etc.

4. The opposition to AD 2072 refuse to work with Mendoza.
The Deaf community is the community of people who are the most impacted by this bill and we were not even contacted when Mendoza first authored this bill. We have met with Mendoza andhis Legislative Director. Rene Bayardo. at least twice each month in addition to email correspondence. It wa during the first meeting with Mr. Mendoza that we learned that although he authored AB 2072, he wa not able to explain what each of the communication options listed inhis bill (cued speech and total communication) were. Hence, we took the opportunity to educate him and rayed in touch with him regarding provisions in the bill, especially since we are the community oE people most impacted y this bill and ar the community of people who were not included in the first place when this bill was first authored.

Candy surely know how to TWIST things around by skipping "and we were not even contacted when Mendoza first authored this bill.

Mike McConnell and many Republicans' favorite conservative, Ronald Reagan, but seems too many conservatives tend to impose the mandatory government requirement upon people. Reagan's famous quote - "Get the government off our back!" What a hypocrisy and contradiction!

Guess what? The Reagan administration shoved many big government mandates into people's throats like threatening the state government to raise the legal age of drinking to 18 years old or will lose the federal highway funding, etc. Sheesh!

Patti Durr have all good points about why why why why the government insist that everyone ought to see the audiologist. Is that really trampling upon our constitutional rights to decide what is best for our own children? See Durr's vlog! The title of vlog is "AB 2072 - Deceit is not Sweet".

Everyone puzzled why all deaf children in California must see an audiologist after being confirmed the hearing status at hospital delivery room. Duh! Is another government bureaucratic layer to butt into people's lives as what the politically conservative government tend to do? Look at the Meese Commission on Pornography in the 1980s! Mike McConnell defended Russell the Deaf Bunny's right to display the degrading materials in front of deaf families and children at the one of the Deaf Expo. Don't forget that!

Deaf children from deaf families have to drag the poor deaf child all the way to the audiologists office which the child already know that he/she is definitely deaf! What a waste of taxpayers' money and insurance money! No wonder why conservatives whine and whine about the Obama health care being too intrusive into people's lives, but all right for them to impose their values and beliefs upon us, the Eye of the People!

Have Mike McConnell or deaf detractors being experienced of being appointed to the advisory board by the elected officeholder??? Nyet!

During the early 1990s, I was appointed to the independent living advisory board by Washington, DC Mayor Sharon Dixon. Was I truly qualified to serve on this advisory board??? Definitely NOT!

The office of DC Mayor Dixon just sent me a letter to congratulate me to serve on the DC Independent Living advisory board out of "blue". I never expressed such an interest to serve on that advisory board. Of course, I was enthrilled and honored to be appointed by DC Mayor Dixon at age of 25.

I attended and attended most of the independent living advisory board meetings for about three years. Nothing accomplished at all. The IL advisory board just discussed same things all over and all over on one subject - agrument about the organizational by-laws. What the fuck!!!

Nothing of any agenda or issues to discuss and vote! The advisory board was chaired by the fucking blind guy, who happened to have a beautiful deaf daughter. That chairperson always said to me - "I have a deaf daughter" with head nodded and displayed "Steve Wonder-like" teeth. Yes, the ASL interpreter was provided, but always got in a heated arguments with me. That interpreter always asked me - "You, DC resident?? Please repeat, repeat what you said",
"Wait until someone done with their sayings", "Sorry, too late for your turn to speak" and keep interpreting, interpreting. What the fuck!

I had my tolerance level already exceeded above the normal means. I gently banged on the conference table for me to say something - "Why the hell we keep talking about the organizational bylaws revision for three years???" Guess what? The assigned interpreter refused to repeat what I said in front of the advisory board. I walked out in digust!

I chose not to attend any fucking advisory board meetings at all. I found out that I was still on the advisory board after more than two years absence. I happened to have conversation with David Nelson, deaf DC resident and DC Association of the Deaf member at that moment. Nelson and other deaf individuals had no knowledge about me being on the IL advisory board. See that?? What a big joke about the so-called advisory board itself appointed by the elected officeholder!!

Wonder how the hell for the qualification of someone to serve on the advisory board to be appointed by the Governor of California??? Will someone be selected based on hir own expertise in given area??? Or the Governor's whim to appoint such individuals tailored to his political preference to pack the advisory board in name of democracy? That would be seen more as a sleath dictatorship for the Governor to appoint individuals to the advisory board.

WHY can't the targeted community like the deaf stakeholders and parents of deaf children to make list of recommendations for individuals serving on the AB 2072 advisory board? Will the appointment of individuals be truly qualified and efficient to serve on the AB 2072 advisory board?

We would look at two major gubernational candidates running for the California governor's seat - Meg White, wealthy CEO candidate - very pro-business individual and Jerry Brown, the tiresome liberal, who really fuck up the city of Oakland in big-time. Should we trust either White and Brown to pack the AB 2072 advisory bill for the creation of balanced and fair brochure?

Why wait untl 2017 for the deadline of completing the brochure? Why can't the brochure be all done in less than 2 years or less?

People Often Get Unsolicited Advice from Doctors!

The AB 2072 opponents have the legitimate reason to be skeptical of audiologists and doctors. Just read on and find out WHY!

More and more hearing patients experienced such an unsolicited advice from their own doctors nowadays beyond their given roles or duties.

So the opponents of the AB 2072 bill do not imagine anything at all! Look at the enclosed article from the USA Today to see how and why the opponents have the legitimate reason to oppose the AB 2072 bill based on their personal and professional experience dealing with deaf kids.

The licensed audiologist really could say nothing to parents of deaf babies/kids, but shown hir own body language or give some hints beyond the legal definition of the given law. Many people know how to find some loopholes around the law anyway. People could be very clever to get away with the law.

For example, the assigned primary doctor in Florida rudimentary signed in ASL to me at the end of our very first appointment - "I WANT SEX WITH YOU" with big grin last February 2010. That really appalled and disgusted me due to his unethical and unprofessional behavior. I left off in real shock! That very good-looking doctor in his early 30s crossed over the line.

Guess what? I was put in very awkward postiton since I just got the health care coverage and don't know what to do. I was going to file the complaint against that doctor. I decided to give the very same doctor another chance due to my "heart of gold". The doctor did make another inappropriate remark like pointing out to hairy-chested guys from the magazine left on the doctor's office on my third visit. I just nodded with very cool head.

Before seeing the doctor for very first time, the office staffers did inquire me whether I am gay or not. I replied "What is to do with the medical visit?" The staffers gave me a poke face and gulped. I was very shocked to learn that I was being screened for my sexual preference to see that doctor. Jesus Christ!

Another incident with different Florida doctor which the first "gay" doctor willingly refer me to see the "leg" doctor due to my past auto accident. I need the specified othropedetic support for the right leg.

Guess what? The leg doctor looked at me like a piece of meat and licked his tongue. He came to me and grabbed my buttock, then rubbed my belly and patted on my chest with his glittering eyes. The doctor had a wife! I was totally stunned about another doctor done inappropriate touchings on me.

I found out about the real incompetence of Florida state medicine board from disciplining the licensed Florida doctors anyway.

California have the lowest rate of serious disciplinary actions against doctors! Look at the enclosed link above!

Another similar occurrence to me in Washington, DC at the George Washington University Hospital. The medical male student intern was assigned to do the annual physical examination. He examined me thoroughly until he seen my male genital. That suddenly aroused the very good-looking intern. He did give me his email address with seductive smile. I was also shocked about him being unethical and unprofessional.

Few weeks later, I came to the hospital for another appointment. Guess what? The very same medical student intern approached me and asked me how come I did not write him an email message at all. I simply told him "Jesus Christ!". The medical student intern gave me his puppy look. I left with rolling eyes in disbelief!

I would be not surprised at all about audiologists to find some way to give and pressure parents of deaf babies and kids. Many medical patients or parents of deaf babies and kids really are not familiar with the existing laws or the "supposedly to do" professional and ethical conducts among the medical profession.

One nurse in Boston did hug me out of blue. Another nurse at the U.S. Senate's infirmary room hugged me pretty long in the early 1990s. I was dumbfounded when I was just only 24 years old. I asked that infirmary nurse why she done such thing. The nurse wrote "You are so adorable!" I said "Uh-huh".

See that???? The medical profession are not to trust at all. :(

I wonder why we, the deaf people not protest at FDA and State Medical Associations on the sidewalks and make the noises. I strongly believe we should act more than talking. Look at ADAPT. they blocked the city busses from running cuz they were not accessible to the riders in the wheelchairs. They made impact and changed. We can change if we, the deaf people protest and made the change.

Real Fishy About AB 2072's So-Called Advisory "Stakeholder " Group

The revised AB 2072 bill with 16 amendments back to last August 2nd, 2010 is much worst than the original bill. It is definitely written by the lobbyists vested in the cochlear implant companies and AVT schools.

Look at the faction from one amendment in concern for the so-called stakeholder "advisory group" -

(c) (1) The department shall convene an advisory stakeholder panel
to contribute to the development of the informational pamphlet
required pursuant to subdivision (a). The members of the panel shall
receive no compensation for their services, but shall be allowed the
actual necessary traveling expenses incurred in the discharge of
their duties. The panel shall be composed of eleven members, as
follows:
  (A) An adult who is deaf or hard of hearing, and who uses
auditory-oral language, appointed by the Governor.
  (B) An adult who is deaf or hard of hearing, and who uses visual
language, appointed by the Governor.
  (C) An educator of the deaf in an auditory-oral educational
setting, appointed by the Senate Committee on Rules.
  (D) An educator of the deaf in a visual language education
setting, appointed by the Senate Committee on Rules.
  (E) A parent representative of a child who primarily uses
auditory-oral communication methods, appointed by the Governor.
  (F) A parent representative of a child who primarily uses visual
language, appointed by the Governor.
  (G) A representative of a nonprofit organization that services
primarily auditory-oral learners, appointed by the Speaker of the
Assembly.
  (H) A representative of a nonprofit organization that services
primarily visual language learners, appointed by the Speaker of the
Assembly.
  (I) A researcher engaged in the study of auditory-oral
communication for persons who are deaf or hard of hearing, appointed
by the Governor.
  (J) A researcher engaged in the study of visual language and
communication modalities for persons who are deaf or hard of hearing,
appointed by the Governor.
  (K) The Secretary for Education, who shall be an ex officio
member.
  (2) (A) All members of the panel shall be appointed no later than
January 1, 2012. An appointee to the panel shall not serve for more
than five years.
  (B) No member of the panel may have a financial relationship or a
conflict of interest with any entity that has contributed funding
pursuant to subdivision (f).
  (3) Subject to subdivision (f), the panel shall commence
operations on January 1, 2012. The panel shall provide
recommendations to be included in the pamphlet developed pursuant to
subdivision (a) six months after the panel commences operations.
Every two years thereafter, the department shall review the pamphlet
and shall revise the information, if the department determines that
new or revised information is necessary. At the request of the
department, the panel may be asked to reconvene to review updates and
changes to the pamphlet. The panel shall then have three months to
review and provide additional recommendations to the department.
  (4) The department and the panel shall consider written input and
information submitted by members of the general public in the
creation of the pamphlet.
  (d) The panel shall remain in existence until January 1, 2017.
  (e) The pamphlet developed pursuant to subdivision (a) shall be
made available in Cantonese, English, Spanish, and Vietnamese. The
pamphlet developed pursuant to subdivision (a) shall be made
available on the department's Internet Web site and the
Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Board's Internet Web site.
  (f) (1) There is hereby created the Language and Communication for
Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children Fund in the State Treasury. The
fund shall contain donations that have been collected and deposited
for the purposes of this section, as well as any federal funds made
available for purposes of this section. Notwithstanding Section
16305.7 of the Government Code, the fund shall also contain any
interest and dividends earned on moneys in the fund. No entity may
contribute moneys to this fund that participates in a lobbying
activity or has a financial relationship or any other conflict of
interest, with, any appointed panel members, or that stands to
benefit financially from the outcome of the pamphlet development. No
state funds shall be used to implement this section.
  (2) Subject to paragraph (3), moneys in the Language and
Communication for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children Fund shall be
available, upon appropriation by the Legislature, for the
implementation of this section.
  (3) No moneys shall be expended from the fund until the Director
of Finance determines that sufficient money is in the fund to
implement this section. If sufficient money is in the fund, the
Director of Finance shall file a written notice thereof with the
Secretary of State. Subdivisions (a) to (e), inclusive, shall not be
implemented until moneys in the fund are appropriated for purposes of
this section.
  (g) Notwithstanding subdivision (c) of Section 124116, as used in
this section, "department" means the State Department of Education.

The creation of advisory board is definitely controlled by the hearing people, 
no possibility of "average citizen being given such opporunity to serve on the 
advisory board. Why the individuals ought to be appointed by the Governor and the 
Senate Rules Committee (Tony Mendoza serve on this standing committee. Remmy my latest

Here's EVIDENCE About Deaf Girl Spent 70 Years In Mental Hospital

Someone sent me a private email message which this person never read or seen about the deaf girl spent her 70 years in the mental hospital based on misassumption. The staffers at the mental hospital were much aware of the deaf girl's own innocence, but still bounced her from mental hospital to another mental hospital. Kinda sound familiar to all of us?

Misdiagnosis of the Deaf Within the AB 2072 Brought Memories of Institutionalization

The recent legislative maneuverings by the untrustworthy Tony Mendoza and his corporate wolves with the AB 2072 bill surely remind us much of often misdiagnosis of deaf children and adults as "feeble-minded", "unintelligent", "uncommunicative", "animal-like", "mentally unstable" and "need to supervise" in the past.

Too many normal-minded and intelligent deaf children and adults ended up institutionalized against their own wills at the state mental hospitals over two centuries. Past horror memories of deaf children and adults got placed in the wrong facilities shouldn't be forgotten at all.

In the past, many doctors often recommended to the distraught parents of deaf children that they ought to send their own deaf child to the state mental hospital(s). So parents tend to look at people in "white coats" to be knowledgeable on deaf people in general. Ever the prejudiced doctors urged many parents of deaf child to be sent to the oral school.

The recent case with the unjustifiable and wrong placement of deaf girl into the state mental hospital which took doctors more than 70 years to diagnosis the elderly deaf lady as most normal and intelligent person.

Audiologists are the new novelty of diagnosing deaf children which could cost the deaf child hir true potential ever hir own destinty. Of course, many audiologists are often pressured to do the "sale pitch" with referrals and recommendations which benefits their own firms and own pocket, ex. commissions.

Nothing new about the common treads lie within the professional fields - medical and psychological authorities to misdiagnosis our deaf children.

How much we should put faith in audiologists to make the "honest to God" recommendation to parents of deaf children?

Jeez, the latest ploy of getting doctors and audiologists to serve on the advisory board are the latest reminder of the energy industry running and dictating the regulatory board. See what happen with the BP oil spills are the best example of how we could avoid the costly mistake with the deaf child's own future.

SENATOR CHRISTINE KEHOE (Chair): And we are going to bring up Mr. Mendoza now to take up AB 2072 on hearing screening. A number of citizens have come to the Capitol to testify on this, and we have sign language interpreters here [gesturing], so we'd like to dispense with that bill. We appreciate Mr. DeVore's courtesy in allowing Mr. Mendoza to come up. So we will go to 2072. Mr. Mendoza, do you open on that?

ASSEMBLYMAN TONY MENDOZA: Yes, Madam Chair. Thank you members. I'm here to present on AB 2072, with the amendments that we've taken, the Senate Health Committee, with the help of our Senator Alquist [motions to Sen. Alquist], this bill will now require the California Department of Education to develop a pamphlet that will--that is comprehensive and provides information to parents on American Sign Language as well as auditory/oral approaches. The California Department of Education will develop this pamphlet with the input of stakeholder--by a stakeholder group that will include representatives from various communication options. The cost of this pamphlet and conducting the stakeholder panel will be covered by non-state funds--and we worked, and the Senator, on making sure we are clear on that. This information will be presented by the audiologist who tells parents that their child has been identified as deaf or hard of hearing. The information will also be given to parents at a second time by their local Early Start provider. And with that, Madam Chair, we have some folks here to speak in favor, starting with one of the parents, Licia King.

SEN. KEHOE: Thank you, Mr. Mendoza. Before we go to the witnesses--that will be momentary--if I could have the audience's attention. How many people are prepared to speak on behalf, or opposed, to this bill, AB 2077 [sic]? Either way, pro or con? [pause] Alrighty, so we will take--we'll take three statements in favor, and then will take the rest of the in-favor witnesses. Then we'll take the three statements opposed, and take the rest of the statements opposed.

MR. MENDOZA: Yes, Madam Chair, do you want to set a time limit for each speaker?

SEN. KEHOE: It doesn't look like there are all that many. You know what? Statements should be on point, on the fiscal matters, and no repetition, and the statements can go on as long as the Chair is listening, so--

MR. MENDOZA: [laughs] Great, thank you.

SEN. KEHOE: --so I'll determine--I'll determine how long they go [laughing]. But we're prepared to hear, of course, people who have come a ways to talk about the bill, so go ahead, miss.

LICIA KING: Good morning, my name is Licia King and I'm the parent of six-year-old deaf twin girls. We first discovered that the girls had their hearing loss when they failed the newborn hearing screening at birth with their confirmed diagnosis. We were given no information about communication alternatives. A teacher of the deaf did come to our home and we began learning sign language, but we quickly found that that was not well suited for us, as there are no other deaf members in our immediate or extended family. It took a friend for us to become aware of the local listening-and-spoken-language program that ultimately was a better choice for us. While attending this program, both of my daughters received cochlear implants, and by their fourth birthday they had age-appropriate speech and language skills. They're now fully mainstreamed in our neighborhood school, sitting beside their hearing peers. They require minimal support services and are meeting or exceeding state standards. [pause] I cannot stress enough that it is my parental right to make decisions for my children, and it is best to do so with complete information. We live in a country that is based on the freedom to choose, and rarely is there a situation where one size fits all. But for all future parents of children born with hearing loss, I ask that you give them the information they need to make an informed decision that is timely and best for their family situation. Thank you.

LAURA TURNER: Laura Turner representing California Coalition of Option Schools and we're in support of the bill.

SEN. KEHOE: Thank you very much.

JANET CHRISTENSEN: Janet Christensen, also of California Coalition of Option Schools. I'm also a parent and a teacher of the deaf and I'm in favor of this bill.

SEN. KEHOE: Very good. Other testimony in favor of the bill? [pause] Folks? Testimony in favor? Alright then I'll ask you three to vacate those chairs. We'll bring up those opposed to the bill--opposed to AB 2077 [sic]. [pause] Alrighty, if you could come up and give us your name and your statement, please? [pause] Good morning.

SHERI FARINHA: [voice of interpreter] Good morning. My name is Sheri Farinha. I'm here representing the California Deaf Newborn Identification Advocacy Stakeholders [CDNIAS] of parents and the Deaf community members. Senator Polanco is very ill and unable to join me today to express our concerns and why we are opposing this bill in its current form. There were amendments that were made during the Health Committee policy hearing and they're not in its current form of this bill, which is why we still stand opposed. I would like to share our concerns regarding the part of the bill that says, quote: "Provides that the State, audiologists, nor Early Start program providers shall incur any costs for implementing this bill." Who will pay for this bill? That's our question. Also, the new fund to be set up will be empty until the state gets contributions? How much money will be needed to cover this entire bill? If no money [is obtained] then what happens to this bill as required? Regarding the advisory panel, we want to make sure that this committee--that the state is responsible under the Americans with Disabilities Act to understand that it absorbs the responsibility to pay for all of the accommodations--whether sign language interpreters, oral interpreters, real time captioning--the state is responsible to pay for that and it's not contingent on any contributions to the fund. We hope that the staff analysis has asked the California Department of Education costs related to everything involved in this bill and whether they were going to absorb the costs. It's really important to have enforcement of the funds, and who will monitor and make sure that the contributions are not in conflict, from any big-time industry with those who are represented on the panel, to make sure that there's no conflict of interest--who is going to monitor that? If the bill is amended, will the Committee be looking at those changes in the amendments? The costs associated with the shipping of the current pamphlet is roughly fourteen hundred audiologists in the State of California that are California licensed. While this bill creates a new professional activity in which the degree, the certification, licensing, does not require audiologists to be knowledgeable in the educational aspect of sign language development, therefore they would be asked to present information to new parents, and that would require an additional training, so I hope that the training costs are included. The Chair of the Health Committee, Senator Alquist, did ask for restrictions on the audiologists, and that's not in the current form of the bill, so we have concerns there. What would that mean? Audiologists, [only] registration, not license required [to practice] in the State of California, not including [knowledge of] aspects related to American Sign Language, and it's really critical that they have training before they are allowed to pass out any kind of materials or information, to be able to intelligently answer questions related to American Sign Language. Also, the bill talks about the pamphlet and collecting information from the advisory panel, as well as collecting written information. We want to make sure that the California Department of Education has a survey and that that information is available in American Sign Language on video on the CDE website. [pause] The bill itself also says that the Department will be able to, or needs to include travel costs--you know that there's automatically some travel costs that affect some panel members. We hope that the Appropriations Committee takes a hard look at all of the different areas of concern and makes sure that the funds themselves--that someone is able to monitor and make sure that it's impartial, and neutral. So thank you for your attention to our concerns.

SEN. KEHOE: Thank you. We appreciate your comments.

MS. FARINHA: --I'm here to answer any questions.

SEN. KEHOE: Thank you. Is there--I'm going to go to Senator Alquist, the chair of our Senate Health Committee, after the testimony is finished, but first let me see. Is there any additional testimony opposed to AB 2077 [sic]? Please come on up? Any other testimony opposed, you should be coming up now. [pause] Alright, sir, tell us your name and your statement?

BOYCE HINMAN: Yes, thank you. Yes, I'm Boyce Hinman. I'm with California Communities United Institute and sadly, we must oppose this bill. We do not believe that referring the parents to an audiologist will result in a fair and accurate description of all of the options available for the parents and for their children, and we think the legislation needs to be amended to make sure that that happens, and so, as I said, regretfully we oppose the bill.

SEN. KEHOE: Thank you.

MR. HINMAN. Thank you.

SEN. KEHOE: Thank you. Any additional testimony for, or against, AB 2077 [sic]? Seeing none.

MR. HINMAN: 2072.

SEN. KEHOE: Beg your pardon. I'm looking at the wrong line--2072. Thank you very much. Senator Alquist, you have some comments?

SENATOR ELAINE ALQUIST: I do have some comments.

SEN. KEHOE: And we do appreciate your work on this bill in the Health Committee.

SEN. ALQUIST: Thank you, and I do appreciate Assemblyman Mendoza's work on this bill. I and my staff have spent hundreds of hours on this one bill. In fact, somebody even said to me, you know, are you--why did you even take on this issue? I took it on because I care about these children and because once a week, for all of my four years in college, I volunteered at the Illinois School for the Blind in Jacksonville, Illinois where MacMurray College is. And I worked with children who had multiple handicaps. So I really care about the children, and we here are doing something to make something better for children, and this really has become a really good bill. One thing I'd like to--well, several things. One, the opposition keeps talking about the Department of Education. Well, the opposition really wanted the Department of Education to house this bill, should it become law, and now they're bringing up some other issues which I'm sure the Appropriations staff can deal with. Assemblyman Mendoza, for his part, took every single amendment that we asked, except one, which he agreed to but just time-wise it did not work out for him to take it till now, and we're hoping--and I will say exactly what the amendment does, and I'm hoping that this can be done while the bill is on suspense here in Appropriations. I asked the author to incorporate language in the next committee to prohibit audiologists from steering parents toward a particular option and from influencing the parents' decision beyond their scope of practice. [pause] That is fair. The assemblyman agreed to it. I hope that it will be taken here in Appropriations. I've not seen any language from the opposition--any compromise language on this issue and I believe that this particular amendment will truly see to it that the audiologists are not doing anything inappropriate, which is the opposition's main concern, and I understand that, I get that, and this amendment will take care of that issue. I really hope that this bill will make it out of both houses [and] be signed into law, because it is time that parents who have babies who cannot hear have options presented to them in a timely fashion, and that means all options so that parents can decide what they want for their child, and that is what this bill does. So I really ask for your support.

SEN. ALQUIST: I would love to make the motion, but I believe it's in the bill's best interests and the children's best interests to hold the bill on suspense and take the amendment that I just addressed.

SEN. KEHOE: Thank you Senator Alquist, and I will just explain the process a little bit, because Senator Alquist's remarks, I think, uh, I agree with. The bill meets the requirement for--the criteria for suspense because there are costs of about a hundred and twenty-six thousand dollars in coming years. The amendments that will be author's amendments that Senator Alquist referred to are policy amendments with no fiscal impacts, so taking care of those on suspense will not change the fiscal status of the bill. We will--unless there's further comments from members, I'll take Finance and then we'll close this.

(Department of Finance staff member:) The potential costs of convening the panel and preparing the pamphlet are unknown at this time. Preliminary estimates from the Department of Education range between three hundred thousand and four hundred thousand dollars for travel and printing costs. However we do know that the bill stipulates that no state funds will be used, and the provisions of this bill are dependent upon the determination by the Department of Finance, that sufficient funds have been collected and deposited into the special fund created for this purpose. We do continue to note that there could be potential cost pressures as a result of this measure should private funding not become available.

SEN. KEHOE: Thank you. Then without further comment and without objection, the bill goes to the suspense file and we'll work with the author on the amendments between now and Thursday.

MR. MENDOZA: Yes, we will be working--actually we started working with your staff already as far as how we could reduce the costs [of the bill]. Hopefully the bill will get out of suspense.

Re: Newfoundland and Labrador’s Provincial School for the Deaf Closure

As former Ontario Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) for York East and Parliamentary Assistant to Minister of Education, 1990-1995, I am taking this moral duty to write this letter of concerns and recommendations to reserve the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador’s decision regarding Provincial School for the Deaf in St. John’s in the light of the Government of Canada’s ratification of United Nations Convention on Rights of Persons with Disabilities (March 11, 2010), 21st International Congress on The Education of the Deaf 2010 Vancouver New Era Accord, (July 19, 2010) and Charter of Rights and Freedom (i.e., Supreme Court of Canada’s Eaton decision regarding the need of continuum of educational placements, including provincial school). I wish to express grave concerns of the decision of Newfoundland and Labrador’s Provincial School for the Deaf closure and its serious implications without having proper consultation with Deaf community, parents of deaf and hard of hearing children in the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador, and external experts on Deaf Education issues. Furthermore, you may not get full accurate and professional information provided by your own civil servants, Minister’s office, Premier Office, and groups who may engage in the practices of ideology of Education of the Deaf (i.e., downsizing, discouraging, eliminating or depriving sign language and Deaf school without knowing its serious implications; many new parents of deaf children are not aware of potential risks/side effects of Auditory Verbal Therapy (AVT) educational programs in school boards until their children experience mental health and language problems in their later life. There is no checklist for teachers of deaf and parents of deaf children to identify mismatched communication and acting-out behaviours).

Provincial Court of Saskatchewan (August 19, 2005) Judge Orr recognized that physicians and medical personnel, audiologists, educators, child protection workers and others are undoubtedly caring and capable professionals. It was clear that, throughout, as they should, these people acted in strict accordance with the policies, directives and mandates of the governmental or other bodies for which they work. Unfortunately, the best efforts of these fine people failed to avert a terrible disaster in the life of a little deaf boy.

The judge ruled that American Sign Language (ASL) must be offered to Deaf children as a communication option in the early years. This the clear message contained in a landmark Saskatchewan court decision. At issue in this court is the philosophy of Saskatchewan Pediatric Auditory Rehabilitation Centre (SPARC), the publicly funded pre-school program offered to deaf children in the province. SPARC follows the the restrictive “auditory-verbal” approach which focuses only on restoration and remediation of hearing and speech.

You may not realize or may not be aware of that your Ministry of Education is promoting a one-sided system – auditory-verbal supports and education that do not make ASL resources and services available to Deaf children available in School Boards across the province of Newfoundland and Labrador while Provincial School for the Deaf in St. John’s is only ASL resources and services available to Deaf children in the province.

In Ontario, Akamatsu, Musselman and Zweibel, 2000, Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto research studies have showed that there were 93% of Deaf children are initially enrolled in auditory oral programs. By preschool, down to 67% are educated orally; by elementary, down to 58% are educated orally;

By adolescence only 31% are educated orally; and 62% shift from oral to signing programs for Deaf children between the early preschool years and adolescence.

The Canadian Hearing Society (CHS), a social service agency, serving deaf and hard of hearing consumers reported that there is growing higher number of demands of that deaf and hard of hearing students and youth received CONNECT Mental Health Services, General Support Services, Employment Services and Literacy Programs as a result of inappropriate educational placements (i.e., without appropriate sign language supports in school boards and lacking of “first” language mastery has life-long negative effects). This translates into the high cost of inappropriate educational placement including the educational costs, employability costs, emotional costs and financial costs for social support services (i.e., prison, mental health services, underemployment, unemployment, and social assistance).

CHS documented information that many parents of deaf and hard of hearing children, deaf and hard of hearing youth and teachers of deaf reported their experiences of reported inaccessible communications and attitudinal barriers in the classroom in school boards in several provinces across Canada. The examples of students’ experiences include mismatch communications between student and his/her parents and family, inaccessible communications between student and his/her teachers, low expectations, mislabeling, social isolation, cyber bulling, bullying, harassment and discrimination (i.e., denial of communication access services such as sign language interpreters, captioning services, lack of captioning in any media format).

"A U D I S M". His video ought to be the mandatory requirement for all DEAF and HEARING pre-college classrooms to view and understand what "audism" really stands for.

I dearly worship J.D. for his "punch in the face" ASL. Hope to see more of J.D. in near future. I seen this video before, but still want to show his video to hearing ASL students about the real beauty of ASL.

Joseph Kennedy and AB 2072

The story of Joseph Kennedy, JFK's father and Hollywood major actress Gloria Swanson back to the early Hollywood years (1900s-1920s) surely remind us much of such a similar parallel between Kennedy/Swanson and parents of deaf babies/youngsters with the AB 2072. How come??

Actress Gloria Swanson desperately asked Joseph Kennedy for his help with the financial troubles. Kennedy had a well-known reputation for being very successful businessman and financier for Hollywood. Kennedy agreed to re-organize Swanson's finances, then had endless sexual liaisons with the major Hollywood actress.

In the end, Joseph Kennedy made himself very R I C H and left Swanson extremely POOR at her own expense.

What is the point of story about Joseph Kennedy and Gloria Swanson with the AB 2072?

The California Coalition consisted of the cochlear implant makers and schools specialized in AVT are doing the same thing to parents of deaf babies and youngsters whose really desperately seek for the true miracles of turning their own kids into fully functional beings.

In the end, deaf kids get shortchanged from the deficiency of educational foundations if the kids are really deprived from using the natural language of the deaf to lead very productive life.

Although, Arnold Schwarzenegger (Arnie) married to Joseph Kennedy's family. Arnie and the rest of California State Legislature ought to remind themselves about the shameful past of the Kennedys especially what Joseph Kennedy done to Rosemary Kennedy, the eldest daughter of the Kennedy Dynasty.

Joseph Kennedy was a well-educated person with a lot of money and power, but he ended screwing up his own eldest daughter with the option of lobotomy (the enclosed source below from the PBS website on the documentary of lobotomies in America) -

From the 1930s through the 1950s, lobotomies were all the rage. It took an American, Dr. Walter Freeman, to revolutionize the procedure by making it quick and easy.

You may have heard reference to someone performing a lobotomy with an ice pick and assumed it was a joke. Unfortunately, it was not. Freeman's technique was to stick an icepick into the brain through the eye socket, then hacking the frontal lobe free by swirling it around in there.

World War II caused a huge surge in psychiatric patients, and the easy fix had never looked better. Additionally, a growing body of psychiatrists believed lobotomy might be an effective way to treat such "psychiatric disorders" as Communism, homosexuality, nymphomania and general godlessness.

In 1949, about 5,000 lobotomies were performed in the U.S. Some estimates place the total number of lobotomies performed in the U.S. from the 1930s through the 1950s as high as 50,000.

Kennedy's sister Rosemary received one of Freeman's ice-pick lobotomies, resulting in a severe mental impairment that left her paralysed, incoherent, and incontinent. According to some accounts, Rosemary had suffered from a mild mental retardation, which the lobotomy was supposed to fix.

Another of Freeman's patients was up-and-coming young actress Frances Farmer, considered by many to be "the next Garbo". After being arrested for disorderly conduct and subsequently stigmatized as a Communist sympathizer, Farmer was involuntarily institutionalized and progressively treated with every failed snake-oil psychiatric technique known to science in the 1940s.

During a decade spent in and out of institutions, Farmer was subjected to barbarous treatment, some medical and some simply abusive. Finally, Freeman came calling with his ice pick in hand. (There is some controversy about whether or not Freeman actually used the ice pick on Farmer, but she was definitely one of his patients, and he was a bit of a one-trick pony.) Farmer fared better than Rosemary Kennedy... arguably. She didn't end up a vegetable.

In Response to NTID President on the ICED Statement

"Save Our Deaf Schools" E-Contributor, Brian Riley, sent out his own reply to the current National Technical Institute of the Deaf (NTID) president when Dr. DeCaro made the comment regarding the International Congress (Conference) of Educators of the Deaf known as the ICED's statement:

Commentary on the DeCaro memo:

A memo issued by James DeCaro of the National Technical Institute of the Deaf implies that the mission of a college or university should be: "expanding options" in order to "meet the needs of students." The full context of the quote is this sentence:

"In the educational enterprise, this translates into our need to conduct the business of expanding options: to meet the needs of students; not limit them; and support them in expanding/determining their own options."

This sentence, however, contains many problematic notions. First of all, it seems to presume a "consumer" model of education where the job of a university or college president is seen as being similar to grocery store manager. Under this type of model, the job of university or college president is simply to make sure that the metaphorical "shelves" in the "store" are stocked with enough items to satisfy any potential "shopper" (i.e., student).

This notion, however, represents a fundamental misunderstanding of the nature of the academic enterprise. The fundamental purpose of academia should be to pursue truth. This type of "consumer model," however, implies that there is no truth to be pursued.

There is nothing "open" about a dialogue in which the participants all agree from the beginning that no conclusions can be made at the end of the dialogue. Such type of dialogue is not an actual dialogue at all, but is a mere occasion for verbal jousting and bantering back and forth without there being any ultimate purpose to the dialogue. This is an untenable view.

Is the world flat or a sphere? It cannot be both. The purpose of academic freedom is to set the stage so that professors and students can make conclusions on the issue. There's no such thing as "expanding options" on the question of whether the earth is flat or spherical, and any philosophy of education that incorporates such a premise of "expanding options" is a pseudo-philosophy.

Let's hope that James DeCaro does not actually subscribe to the philosophy that seems to be indicated by the meaning of the words he used in his July 25 memo.

Perhaps he was writing too quickly and sent out a quick e-mail and wasn't expressing himself clearly. Let's hope that is the case.

Why the millions and millions of parents always MADE the wrong choices with their children's supermarket-bought cereal boxes??? People dealt with racism in many ways from "reverse racism" to "sleath racism". The USDA backpedaled on the forced resignation of Shelly Herrod without reviewing the whole thing carefully. Uh-huh! Edward Miner Gallaudet's Memoir on the 1880 Milan Conference

Many of us, Deaf History and Deaf Studies majors and ASL instructors were very familiar with what really happened behind the 1880 Milan Conference as what Edward Miner Gallaudet wrote in his journal.

Edward Miner Gallaudet and another four American delegates went to the 1880 Milan Conference to witness the deceptive and cunning maneuvers among the "articulation" (oral) supporters to ban sign language and fire deaf educators and administrators everywhere to pave the way for ORALISM.

"The Milan Convention"

The readers of the Annals will remember that in the summer of 1878, during the progress of the French Universal Exhibition, a meeting of instructors of the deaf and dumb was hastily convened, to which the commanding name of International Convention (Congrès Universel) was given. Twenty-seven teachers attended this gathering, out of which number twenty-three were from France; Sweden, Austria, Switzerland, and Belgium each furnishing a single delegate. The character of the assemblage, therefore, did not correspond with its title, and as an attempted representation of the work and various methods of deaf-mute instruction in the world, as well as of the opinions held by instructors, the Convention of Paris was a failure. Moreover, it is well known that the management of the Convention was in the hands of the promoters of articulation, and more especially under the control of representatives of the Pereire Society, (la Société Pereire), an association established some years since in Paris for the purpose of securing the recognition of Pereire as the first teacher of deaf-mutes in France, and to bring about the general adoption of the oral method, which was practiced by Pereire. It is probably not so generally known that several great-grandsons of Pereire are now living in Paris; that they are united in a very wealthy banking firm, and that they have been contributing large sums of money during the past few years for the support of the Pereire Society, and the Pereire School for deaf-mutes, of which Mr. Magnat is the principal.

The Paris Convention appointed a committee of twelve of its own members to make arrangements for a second international meeting. Of those composing this committee, eleven were from France, and a very large majority were ardent promoters of the method of articulation. Milan was selected as the place in which the Convention of 1880 should be held, in which city are to be found two institutions formerly conducted on the method of the Abbe de l’Epée, but which for the past ten years have been giving the greatest possible prominence to articulation.

When the Convention came to be organized, the head of one of the Milan schools, the Abbe Tarra, was made President, and the leading instructor in the other school, Professor Fornari, was made Secretary. Of the four Vice- Presidents and four Vice-Secretaries, seven were pronounced supporters of articulation.

Two days before the opening of the Convention were devoted to public examinations of the Milan schools, at which the delegates were earnestly urged to be present; and during one-half of each day that the Convention was in session no sittings were held, in order to leave the members free to visit the Milan schools.

All these facts are mentioned in order to show—which certainly cannot be disputed—that in arranging for the Convention the promoters of articulation secured every possible advantage to themselves, imparting a partisan character to the whole affair from the very outset. And the sequel will prove that the Convention at Milan was no more international or representative in its composition than that of Paris; that its formal utterances are no more to be taken as representing the sentiments of teachers of the deaf and dumb throughout the world than are the resolutions of a party nominating convention to be regarded as a fair expression of the opinions of the whole community.

And yet a journal of no less prominence and influence than the London Times gravely announces, in a labored editorial published a few days after the adjournment of the Milan Convention, that "no more representative body could have been collected than that which at Milan has declared for oral teaching for the deaf, and for nothing but oral teaching," and speaks of the actions of the Convention as expressing a "virtual unanimity of preference for oral teaching which might seem to overbear all possibility of opposition."

With such stupidity, if it be nothing worse, on the part of the conductors of one of the leading journals of the world, it is not easy to be patient.

If the editors of the Times had taken the slightest pains to inquire, they would have learned that out of the one hundred and sixty-four active members of the Convention eighty-seven or a clear majority of ten, were from Italy; that fifty-six were from France, making, with the Italian members, a majority of seven-eighths; that, of the eight English delegates, six were ardent articulationists, and only two at all favorable to any other method—a proportion which entirely misrepresents the present sentiment of English teachers of the deaf; that the only truly representative delegation present was that from the United States, consisting of five members, duly accredited to the Milan meeting by a Conference of Principals of American Institutions for the Deaf and Dumb held at Northampton last May, in which the supporters of the several methods of instruction now made use of in this country (including all that are known in the world) were assembled in friendly council; that the American delegates represented fifty-one schools, containing over six thousand pupils—a greater number than was represented by all the other one hundred and fifty-nine delegates taken together; that the Convention allowed the American delegates to be outvoted in the proportion of nearly ten to one by the representatives of the two schools of Milan, they being accorded forty-six seats in the Convention.

Possibly, if all these facts had come to the knowledge of the editors of the Times before the publication of the article quoted from above, less might have been said as to the "representative" character of the Milan meeting.

But we are not yet done with the "Thunderer" of Great Britain, for it is unfortunate in the correspondents it employs as well as in its editorial staff.

In an account of the public examinations, so-called, of the Milan schools, given on the two days preceding the assembling of the Convention, the Times reporter says:

"Let it be noted that the medium of examination—the sole medium of communication, in fact, between pupil and examiner, whether teacher or visitor—was speech—speech alone. Every word of the examination was uttered audibly; every word of the answer was spoken in like manner, audibly and loudly. There was not even in this country, where gesture and action so commonly accompany speech, the least resort to signs or finger language. * * * Deaf children were addressed just as if they were not deaf, in spoken language, and they one and all answered in spoken language, though in our country we call them dumb."

Now, while this was all true, the English letter-writer failed to report that the examinations followed very closely the printed programmes; that the answers were in many instances begun before the examiner had completed his questions; that no real examinations was made by outside persons; that many pupils were asked very few questions, while certain other pupils were examined at great length; that these discriminations were made by the teachers in every instance; that no information was given as to the history of the pupil—that is to say, as to whether deafness was congenital or acquired, and whether speech had been developed before hearing was lost or not; that the impression was thus sought to be conveyed to the audiences that all the speech possessed by all the pupils had been imparted to them by their teachers, which was certainly not the case. In view of all which we do not hesitate to characterize these so-called examinations as mere exhibitions, deserving to have very little influence with the professional observer.

The labors of the Convention began at noon on Monday, Sept. 6, and all the time of that day’s session was consumed in complimentary speeches as the election of officers.

The subjects presented for discussion by the Committee on Organization were grouped in four classes, as follows: (1) Those relating to buildings, and all material arrangements for the accommodations of inmates of institutions; (2) everything concerning the details of instruction; (3) the various methods of teaching; (4) special questions.

After what has been said as to the organization and complexion of the Convention, it will surprise no one that, among the many topics suggested in the programme, that of methods of instruction should have engrossed the time of the Convention to the exclusion of almost everything else.

Discussion was begun on the second day by the presentation of a printed volume of one hundred and sixteen pages, prepared by Mr. Magnat, principal of the Pereire school for deaf-mutes in Paris. In this brochure all the topics included in the first three groups were treated in extenso. A small portion only of this volume was read to the Convention. As an evidence of the entente cordiale existing between the head of the Pereire family and those who are working under its patronage, the dedication of this volume is interesting:

"A Monsieru Eugène Pereire, Président due Comité d’organisation du Congrès international de Milan. Hommage de parfait attachment.

"MAGNAT."

Mrs. B. St. John Ackers, well known to the readers of the Annals as an accomplished English lady who has been for some years superintending the education of a deaf daughter, read a paper on the "Mental development of the deaf under the German system."

Mrs. Ackers was followed by Miss Susanna E. Hull, of London, the mistress of a private school for deaf-mutes, in a paper entitled, "My experience of various methods of educating the deaf-born."

Both these ladies urged in eloquent language the superiority of the German or oral method over the French or sign method, but neither recognized the objection which may be raised against the oral method for all deaf-mutes: that, in point of fact, a large proportion of the deaf are incapable of attaining any real success in speech and lip-reading.

The writer of this article opposed the use of either the German or the French method to the exclusion of the other, and advocated a combined system, in which all available means should be employed, these being wisely adapted to the diverse conditions of those who are to be taught.

He admitted the propriety of maintaining schools in which the oral method should prevail, but insisted that at the same time other schools should be provided for the benefit of those who are incapable of success in speech.

These views, however, found little favor in the Convention, and after a debate, absorbing three entire days, in which the presiding officer, the Abbe Tarra, was the most prominent speaker, he occupying more than two hours on two successive days, the following resolutions were adopted, the only negative voices being those of the American delegates and one English delegate, Mr. Richard Elliott, headmaster of the old London Institution:

1. "The Convention, considering the incontestable superiority of speech over signs, (1) for restoring deaf-mutes to social life, (2) for giving them greater facility of language, declares that the method of articulation should have the preference over that of signs in the instruction and education of the deaf and dumb."

2. "Considering that the simultaneous use of signs and speech has the disadvantage of injuring speech and lip-reading and precision of ideas, the Convention declares that the pure oral method ought to be preferred."

On the fifth day of the meeting the writer of this article was invited by the President to read a paper he had prepared on the higher or collegiate education of the deaf and dumb, suggested by the second of the social questions proposed in the programme:

"Where and how can those whom deafness has prevented form pursuing classical studies receive an education equivalent to that of the higher schools open to hearing and speaking students? Should it be in a higher department of the institutions for the deaf and dumb, or in a special institution? Which special or with ordinary instructors?"

The writer argued in favor of the establishment of colleges for the deaf in the several countries of Europe, and maintained that, even with the highest possible facility in speech and lip-reading, the number of deaf students that could pass successfully through an ordinary college would be very small. The effort to give the higher education in each institution to the mere handful that would be capable of receiving it was objected to as expensive and impracticable. The writer demonstrated the practicality of his ideas by giving a history of the successful progress, during the last sixteen years, of the National Deaf-Mute College at Washington.

The suggestion of the founding of colleges for the deaf in Europe was warmly endorsed by Mr. Hugentobler, of Lyons, Padre Marchiò, of Siena, and the Abbe Balestra, of Paris. The President expressed the thanks of the Convention for the paper on Collegiate Education, and desired a copy for publication.

The suggestion was made that the Convention give a formal expression of its approval of the idea of establishing colleges for the deaf in Europe, but Herr Treibel, of Berlin, followed by others, urged that the higher education should not be undertaken Europe while so many deaf-mutes were unable to secure even the primary education.

The discussion on the subject was closed by the adoption of the following:

"Considering that a great number of deaf-mutes do not receive the benefit of instruction, and that this is due to the poverty of their families and the want of suitable institutions, the Convention resolves that Governments ought to take the necessary steps so that all the deaf and dumb shall receive instruction."

The writer had the pleasure of stating to the Convention that the provision urged by the resolution was already made, with very rare exceptions, throughout the State of the American Union. The remainder of the session of Friday was occupied in the discussion of a few details in the work of teaching, more especially concerning instruction in grammar.

On Saturday, the closing day of the meeting, resolutions were adopted urging the preparation of special text-books to be used in deaf-mutes by the oral method; advising the entrance of pupils into schools between the ages of eight and ten years, and their continuance under instruction for at least seven years; advising that no more than ten pupils be assigned to one instructor, and counselling a gradual and progressive substitution of the oral method in institutions in which it is not now employed.

It was decided that the next International Convention should be held at Basle, in August, 1883, and after the usual complimentary speeches and resolutions, the Convention adjourned.

The following papers prepared for the Convention were not read, but will be published in the proceedings: "Advantages to the Deaf of the ‘German’ system in after life," by B. St. John Ackers; "On the Education of the Deaf" by Arthur A. Kinsey, Principal of the Training College for Teachers of the Deaf on the German method, Ealing, near London; "Speech and lip-reading for the Deaf. A teacher’s testimony to the German system," by David Buxton, Ph.D., Secretary of the Society for training teachers of the Deaf and Diffusion of the "German" system in the United Kingdom; and "The Combined System," by the venerable and eminent Monseigneur De Haerne, of Brussels, whose labors and writings in behalf of deaf-mute education are so well known and so highly appreciated in America.

That the business committee did not arrange for the reading of this last paper is an additional proof of the partisan character of the management of the Convention, for in the discussion of the matter of methods fully nine-tenths of the time was occupied by the advocates of the pure oral method. It is, however, not difficult to understand that, in a convention largely made up of ecclesiastics of the Roman Church, the promoters of the pure oral method should have preferred that so high an authority as Monseigneur De Haerne should not be heard in opposition to their views. Had he been present at the Convention, it is probable that the majority in favor of the pure oral method would have been considerably less than it was. And in this connection we are constrained to mention a fact that is not without a certain significance in estimating the value to be placed on the conclusions of the Convention.

A majority of the French delegates were members of an ecclesiastical order called the Brotherhood of St. Gabriel. Many of these brothers expressed the opinion freely in private conversation that signs could not be dispensed with in the instruction of deaf-mutes, and also that not all deaf-mutes could succeed under the oral method. They took no part, however, in the debate until towards the close, when Frère Hubert, inspector of the schools under the direction of the Brothers, rose and announced his conversion to the "pure oral method," closing his little speech by giving thanks to M. Eugène Pereire, though which liberality the members of his brotherhood had been enabled to visit Milan and attend the Convention. And not a brother of St. Gabriel voted against the method of Pereire.

Having now given a brief outline of the proceedings of the Convention, and having demonstrated, as we believe, that it was wholly partisan in its management and not at all representative in its composition or manner of voting, we will attempt to show that the declarations of the Convention (as to methods) are in some respects inconsistent with the expressed views of their prominent supporters, and that these conclusions are based on unsound premises; in fine, that they are deserving of no weight whatever with broad-minded, candid, and progressive friends of deaf-mutes.

If the reader will turn back to resolutions one and two, and will consider them together, it will be perceived that not only is the method of articulation given the preference over that of signs, but that signs are not to be used simultaneously with speech: in other words, all use of signs is to be prohibited in the instruction of deaf-mutes. That such was the requirement of the "pure oral method" its supporters maintained most earnestly at certain points in the debate, and yet at certain other stages of the discussion it was admitted that signs are used under the "pure oral method," and Professor Fornari offered a resolution in which he endeavored to state in terms to what extent signs were to be employed. This resolution was supported by Mr. Hugentobler and several of the more conservative supporters of articulation. But the radicals felt that the admissions of Fornari’s resolution would be inconsistent with the term "pure oral," with which they had resolved to christen their method, and of course did not maintain the motion.

Unfortunate pure oralists! Either horn of the dilemma was found to be an uneasy and painful resting place. If they admitted that signs were employed, the world would smile at the use of the words "pure oral." If they told the world they had banished signs, the records of the Convention would testify against them, for it was distinctly acknowledged that "natural signs," "those which are used and understood by hearing persons," "might be employed in the earlier stages of instruction."

The writer recalls an incident which occurred during his boyhood, when a young Frenchman, just arrived in this country and quite ignorant of English, visited his father’s house. This young man had never before seen a deaf-mute, but on meeting the mother of the family, who was a mute, he at once began talking with her by signs, and continued conversation for more than a hour on a great variety of subjects, making, of course, only such signs as are "used and understood by hearing persons."

It is well known that the signs in use among the Indians of North America, who are certainly "hearing persons," cover a wide range of ideas.

But it is unnecessary to pursue the subject further to show that the so-called "pure oral method" exists only in name. We are not done, however, with the inconsistencies of some of its prominent supporters.

None of the delegates at Milan were more earnest advocates of the "pure oral method" than Mr. Arthur A. Kinsey, who was kind enough to present the writer with a copy of the paper he had prepared for the Milan Convention [See above.], from which we quote the following:

"Before proceeding further, I should propose to classify those for who we are laboring according to their physical and mental condition. I shall ask your consent to placing the simply deaf on the one side, and those deaf and otherwise afflicted on the other: in this latter class I include those suffering from defective brain power, imperfect vision, extreme constitutional weakness, or serious malformation of the vocal and articulating organs.

"The first division it is proposed to instruct on the ‘German’ system; the second one on the ‘French.’ [The italics are ours.]

"At the present time the serious schools in Germany do not reject those suffering other serious aliments in addition to deafness. All the deaf are admitted to the advantages of instruction, regardless of other defect being unhappily present.

"But the question which I desire to present to you is—Should this continue? "Where time, money, and teaching power are limited, where pupils are in excess of school accommodation at the special institutions, would it not be wiser to teach those merely deaf upon the ‘German’ system,—those who would really profit by such instruction and put it to real practical and valuable use in after life,—than to keep back such pupils for the sake of doubly afflicted ones, who, despite all effort and skill, would only be advanced to a certain attainment in spoken language of trifling and most uncertain value. [Again the italics are ours.]

"The children that this method [the Germans] is incompetent to deal with should be cared for by other means not requiring so much capability on the part of the afflicted."

If we may be pardoned for the use of a little slang, we will venture the opinion that few instances are to be met with of a more complete "give-away" of one’s self than the foregoing. Consistent pure oralist! In the convention he votes and shouts for "la méthode orale pure," and then submits a paper in which it is proposed to establish and maintain schools on the "French" or "sign" method, in which it is acknowledged there are certain deaf-mutes with whom the "German" method is "incompetent to deal," and who, under it, "despite all effort and skill, would only be advanced to a certain attainment in spoken language of trifling and most uncertain value." We beg to call the attention of the London Times to this record, and to suggest that if Mr. Kinsey is to be taken as a specimen "pure oralist," there may be something unreliable in the declarations of that "representative body" "which at Milan has declared for oral teaching for the deaf, and for nothing but oral teaching." But we forgive Mr. Kinsey his inconsistencies, and gladly take him on his record, and extend to him the right hand of fellowship.

Far from being a "pure oralist," he is plainly in favor of a "combined system"—a system which welcomes every practicable means of advancing and perfecting the education of all the deaf and dumb; a system which approves of the establishment of schools in which the oral method may be employed, provided that at the same time other schools can be maintained for the benefit of those who are incapable of success in speech; a system which is in operation to-day in New England, with its oral schools at Northampton, Boston, Portland, Providence, and Mystic; with the large and well-known institution at Hartford, where the sign method is still employed with excellent results.

Lest some of Mr. Kinsey’s friends should think we are too fast in placing him where we do, we will consider for a moment, before passing to other matters, just how much is involved in his division of deaf-mutes into two classes, as quoted above.

In this he displays more far-sightedness than we had given him credit for, and we cannot but admire the discretion with which he leaves an open door, and by no means a narrow one, for the convenient exit of those with whom the "German" method is found to be "incompetent to deal."

"Defective brain power:" most happily-chosen expression! For it is applicable to imperfect or weak memory, lack of the imitative faculty, slowness of apprehension, nervousness, and a score of other conditions familiar to those who have had to do with deaf-mutes. "Imperfect vision," including "nearsightedness," "far-sightedness," and other abnormal states of the visual organs, (common among deaf-mutes,) which would stand in the way of success in artificial speech, for this is an achievement of the eye no less than that of the vocal organs. "Constitutional weakness" would furnish a very considerable percentage of the whole number to be educated, and we drop the word "extreme," for surely a predisposition to colds, sore-throat, and catarrhal affections operates seriously against the attainment of speech by deaf-mutes.

And when we add those suffering from "serious malformation of the vocal or articulating organs," we have an aggregate sufficiently large to call for not a few of the "French method" schools Mr. Kinsey so wisely recommends.

But enough has been said to show that the expressed views of prominent "pure oralists" in the Milan Convention are inconsistent with the "declarations" for which they voted. We will now endeavor to make it apparent that these declarations are based on unsound premises.

Taking into account the whole body of deaf-mutes, and the time and money that is available for their education, it is not true that the method based on speech has an "incontestable superiority" over that based on signs.

And first of all, for that class with which, on the authority of Mr. Kinsey, the "German method is incompetent to deal," the boot is quite on the other leg. As to the proportion indicated by this class opinions differ, but in the judgment of some of the ablest instructors of articulation in Europe it outnumbers the other with whom success in speech is practicable.

As to the "incontestable superiority" of speech even for these, all depends on the environment. Given ample funds, implying a large proportion of teachers, and ample time, implying a long term of school training, the superiority of "speech" is admitted. On the other hand, with a period of teaching restricted to four or five years, and funds so limited that but one teacher to twenty or more pupils can be allowed, then we do not hesitate to claim that results of greater practical value to the deaf-mute have been reached and will hereafter be attained under the method of De l’Epée than under that of Heinicke.

A short time since the writer met for the first time a deaf-mute of about forty years of age, a resident of Natick, Mass. He communicated with us by signs, through the use of the manual alphabet, and by writing. He had never learned to speak.

What followed may be taken as a fair sample of this deaf-mute’s ability to use his vernacular, while the facts brought out will give some idea as to his success and pleasure in mingling with those who hear and speak. In presenting the following questions and receiving the answers writing was the sole medium of communication:

"Were you born deaf?"

"Yes sir; I was born deaf and dumb. I can hear loud whistle of an engine plainly."

"How many years were you at the Hartford Institution, and in what year did you leave school?"

"Six years. I was nine years old when I went to school; 1847; left there in 1853.

Before I went to school my mother learned me the finger-alphabet and many words, and also learned to write. Mrs. Vice-President Henry Wilson was my school-mate."

"How have you been employed since you left school?"

"When I left school, farming with my brother seven years; left it on account of hard work. I went into a shoe manufactory, where I have been employed eighteen years, and am still at work."

"Have you had any difficulty in earning enough to support yourself?"

"No, sir; I have not had any difficulty in earning enough to support myself since I left school. Now I am in very comfortable circumstances, and will be able to support myself for as long as I live. My wages in the shop are good."

"Have you made many friends among hearing and speaking people?"

"Yes sir; a great many. I enjoy associating with them very much. They are very good and kind to me."

"How have you conversed with these friends?"

"By writing, and one and two-handed alphabet."

"How many persons have learned the finger alphabet, so as to be able to talk with you?"

"A good many. I cannot count them. They enjoy talking with me very much. Very often they tell me what they are speaking with the others and what the others say."

"When a train of through passes through your mind, do your ideas take shape in signs or in words?"

"In words always, since that is the way in which my ideas are expressed."

That among the graduates of the deaf-mute schools of this country large numbers may be found who have been equally successful in making their way in the world, equally happy in their relations with hearing people, and equally correct in their use of language with the person just alluded to, is too well known to be successfully disputed.

Now, if the person above described could have had his term of study extended fifty per cent, and could have acquired speech and lip-reading, in addition to what he secured at Hartford, he would, of course, have been the gainer. But with his school-term limited to six years, with, perhaps, only a second or third-rate ability to acquire speech, necessitating the devotion of the greater part of his time to speech alone, we do not hesitate to claim the "incontestable superiority," in his case, for the method based on signs. And what is true in this instance will apply in many others.

We now desire to direct attention to a few glaring misstatements to be found in papers presented to the Convention by some of the English delegates, giving evidence of a degree of ignorance or carelessness on their part which, if it is to be taken as an index of their general method of investigation, will readily account for this greatest of all blunders in ascribing an incontestable superiority to the method of speech over that based on signs in the general education of the deaf.

Towards the close of Miss Hull’s paper we find the following:

"When we look at the home life, the social life, and, above all, the religious life of the deaf, at how much greater advantage are those who can freely converse with others by speech and lip-reading, compared with the disciples of the sign languages, who must necessarily confine their intercourse within a circle—the limited circle—of those who have learned the same mode of converse with themselves."

The reader of this paragraph is plainly left to infer that a deaf-mute, educated without speech, has no means of holding intercourse with his fellow-men save through the use of the language of signs. We beg to inform Miss Hull that deafmutes taught on the "sign method" learn to read and write; that they often carry on extended conversations with hearing people in writing; moreover, that they have in the manual alphabet a means of communication easily and very frequently acquired by their hearing friends, which is in many particulars, and under many circumstances, a much more satisfactory medium of conversation than speech and lip-reading.

In the paper presented by Mr. Ackers the following will be found on page 8:

"The contrast was most marked between those taught under the ‘German’ system, with whom we conversed by word of mouth, and those who had been taught under the ‘French’ system, unable to converse with us who whose attempts at writing were most difficult, an in many cases impossible to understand owing to the language of their country being to them a foreign language. That the language of their country will be ever thus, even to the most highly educated, will be admitted by even the staunchest supporters of those systems. Dr. E. M. Gallaudet acknowledged this to me, and said that I might mention that even one so highly gifted by nature and education as his own mother never, even in later years, could be said to have lost in her writings all ‘deaf-mutisms.’"

To those who are at all familiar with educated deaf-mutes in this country it will not be necessary to say anything in reply to the misstatements contained in the above paragraph. But for the benefit of the general reader we will state that we know of no even moderately staunch supporter of the ‘French’ method who admits that the language of their country ever remains as a foreign language to the most highly educated of the deaf and dumb taught under that method; that thousands of deaf-mutes in this country have a fair mastery of verbal language, though they remain dumb; that the writer’s mother, far from being "highly gifted by education," had the misfortune to have reached adult years before the first school for mutes in this country was opened, and enjoyed only three years of instruction; that she, in spite of these disadvantages, gained so good a command of the language of her country as to be able to sustain a voluminous correspondence with members of her family and others, even into extreme old age, never experiencing any difficulty in expressing her ideas in verbal language, which, if not always correct, was usually so, and was certainly more free from errors than that of many hearing persons who have enjoyed far greater educational advantages than were hers.

We venture to promise our friend Mr. Ackers, whose disinterested and generous labors in the cause of deaf-mute instruction command our warmest admiration, that on the occasion of his next visit to America we will place him in communication with educated deaf-mutes whose attainments in verbal language will greatly modify his present views as to the possible results of the "French" method of instruction.

In Mr. Kinsey’s paper we find the following on page 22:

"These remarks are addressed, not at my ‘German system’ brothers, but at those engaged on other methods in my mind far less satisfactory, and I think are not uncalled for, when I remember the words addressed by the head of a National College for the Deaf and Dumb, viz., that he ‘had felt diffident about conferring a degree on a young man upon his graduating who was not competent to construct a grammatically correct sentence in his own native language.’"

We will not say that the above is an intentional misrepresentation, but we will say that it is entirely an unwarrantable statement. What we did "address" to Mr. Kinsey on the occasion alluded was, that in a certain instance we hesitated to confer a degree on a young man who, while he had sustained all the examinations required for his degree, was not always able to use her vernacular correctly. And Mr. Kinsey does not need to be informed that among the hearing and speaking graduates of colleges, both in England and America, there are to be found those who are not always faultless in their use of their "own native language."

Perhaps the most glaring evidence of a lack of knowledge of the subject with which one was attempting to deal with is found in an utterance of the President of the Convention, the Abbe Tarra, whose professional reputation is that of a master of the sign method, which he once taught, as well as of the oral, of which he was the high-priest and apostle at Milan.

He closed his oration in favor of the pure oral method as follows:

"Speech is addressed to the intellect, while gestures speak coarsely to the senses. I used signs for many years in my religious teaching, but decided definitely to give them up and adopt the pure oral system, because I became convinced that my pupils, instead of understanding the abstract ideas I intended to convey to them, were only placed in possession of grossly material images."

Nothing more than this is needed to stamp the Abbe Tarra, in the minds of accomplished instructors of the deaf under the sign method in this country, as a mere tyro in the use of the language of signs. For every master of that language knows how completely it may be made to convey and clearly express the highest religious and moral truths and sentiments.

The limits we have assigned ourselves in this article will not allow the insertion of a number of points we have in mind quite pertinent to the general line of thought suggested by the proceedings of the Convention, and we can only express the hope, in closing, that, in spite of the little value to be attached to the so-called conclusions, good results may flow from the meeting, in an increased interest towards deaf-mutes throughout Europe. And we believe that the sober second thought of many, even, who were carried away by the enthusiasm of the hour at Milan, and were led to vote for impracticable and even impossible things, will deter them from attempting manifest absurdities.

First of all, we the Deaf need something valid proof that looks like "the Deaf Declaration of Independence" with black and white paper to announce all over the internationally world. So we all the Deaf will be free from the oppression:

Hartford, May 13th, 1844.

Hon. Horace Mann,

My Dear Sir,

I should have replied before this to your late very kind letter, but much bodily indisposition, and a pressure of numerous duties have prevented.

I am free to say that I deeply regret the very strong language which you use in your report, so interesting and admirable in most of its features, when you say that the schools for the deaf and dumb in Prussia, Saxony, and Holland, seem to you decidedly superior to anything in this country; because, in order to say this, as I think, understandingly, you ought to be thoroughly acquainted with the system of discipline and instruction pursued in our Asylum, and other American institutions, in its details and practical results; for how else can a fair comparison be made?

The teaching of the deaf-mutes to articulate and to understand what is said to them, is but one part of their education.

The development of the intellectual and moral faculties of deaf mutes; their intellectual and moral training; their government, by moral influence; the imparting to them moral, religious, and other knowledge; their participating, understandingly, in the social and public devotional exercises of the Institution; the furnishing of their minds with the ideas, the facts, and that amount of knowledge, which are necessary to prepare them to understand a vast number of the words which must be taught them; their becoming acquainted with our social and civil institutions; with arithmetic, grammar, geography, and history; with the history, simple doctrines, and the precepts of the Bible; with their duties to God, to their fellow-men, and themselves; and their acquiring a trade, or some means of gaining a livelihood; and especially their being taught to write the English language correctly, and to read books intelligently, (one of the highest solaces and means of constantly progressive self-culture, which deaf-mutes can enjoy,) all these are essential parts of their education.

They may have them without being able to articulate, and understand what is said to them, or some of them may be able to do the latter, and yet be deficient in the former.

In how many cases the two can be combined, and with what degree of success, is a point that needs the most careful examination.

The complete education of deaf-mutes, I am decided in saying, cannot be successfully carried on, especially during the early stages of their instruction, without the use of that very distinct, intelligible, copious, and beautiful language of natural signs, which nature has prompted them in their separate and insulated state, originally to invent, in its more simple elements, and which science and art have advanced to a high degree of perfection. Without this language of natural signs, the teacher can have, at first, no ready and adequate means of free communication with his pupils, (by this language, he has this free communication long, long before he can have it by words): he cannot get hold of their peculiarities of mind; cannot give them instructive illustrations, by practical examples, of the full meaning of very many words; cannot do much to expand their opening faculties; and cannot understand their difficulties, and the questions they may wish to propose to him, respecting these difficulties; a most essential part of the proper instruction of any child.

How far the essential parts of a complete education, which I have above specified, must be retarded, sacrificed, or neglected, in the five, or even six years allowed by the Legislatures of the States, for the actual residence of the deaf and dumb at our public institutions, in order to go through with the long, laborious, and to them, certainly, in many cases, as experience has abundantly shown, very tedious and irksome process of learning to articulate, and to understand what is said to them; how far this process is successful, to the extent of which you so unhesitatingly speak, when as we know the whole subject has, more than once, undergone the severest scrutiny in Europe, by the most sagacious individuals, (philosophers, such as Degeraldo, and Dugald Steward, and accomplished teachers of the deaf and dumb among the number,) who have come to very different results, with regard to the facts in the case, from yours; and how far the English tongue may, as you suggest, present intrinsic difficulties in the matter--these are questions, when we come to the fair investigation of this complicated subject, and wish to balance all the advantages and disadvantages, to answer which demands much practical experience and critical investigation of the whole ground covered.

If you come to Hartford, do let me know it, that I may once more have the pleasure of enjoying your society, and talking over with you, both deaf-mute and other matters of common interest.

RLMDEAF GO TO NAD 2010 CONFERENCE IN PHILLY

RLMDEAF will go to the 50th bi-annual historic National Association of the Deaf (NAD) Conference in Philly - the City of Brotherly Love. RLM dearly love Philly to the heart of the great cosmopolitan "walkable" and "livable" city. Great and amazing dining options beyond imagination like getting the hearty meal during the wee nights at the family-owned/local-owned eateries. No chain restaurants like "Denny" in the downtown Philly area.

The NAD conference site is only two walking blocks to the majestic beautiful Philadephia City Hall. RLM ever seen one of the most spectacular city hall building in the United States. Very historic and eye-opening architecture within the city hall. Ever too many "hot-looking guys" in Philly! Gay guys are more "down to earth" and "perfect masculine" than fluffy and hyprocritical Miami and Fort Lauderdale gay guys!

RLM met an incredibly hunky 23 years old Puerto Rico, Italian and Salvadoran hearing guy with muscular body at the WOOF! bar last Sunday night and enjoyed the written conversation with very friendly guy whose have the 38 years old husbear, a priest! We chatted about issues on the superficality of looks and human vanity.

My heart still is for my ex, but both of us are still on the good term as friends. :) That is real important to me in many ways!

The hot potato issue is the selection of the new NAD CEO (Executive Director) to shape the future advocacy and direction of the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF THE DEAF (NAD) on daily basis thru the organizational leadership. Four NAD CEO finalists were announced last month which created the endless comments and thoughts on those finalists by the social media - Facebook, YouTube and other means. Ricky Taylor aka "Ridor" urged the NAD Board to take the meeting of four NAD CEO finalists beyond the NAD conference site. See his vlog entry.

Ryan Commerson expressed his thoughts on the four NAD CEO finalists with his excellent ponders on question and qualification for "Who Should Be the Next NAD CEO?" via vlog posting.

Many leadership qualities issue facing the Deaf America are with the election of the NAD officers and board members. Or the NAD Board give the special position to David Reynolds to lead the ad hoc unit on the behalf of deaf babies and children working along with John Ebgert and others like the Deaf Bilingual Coalition to give the real hands (voice) to our deaf babies and children from being treated as an exploitative commodity by the cochlear implant manufacturers, eugenicists, audists, social engineers and clueless and ignorant public office holders.

What's Really Going On With Our Country???

"Save Our Deaf School" e-distribution recently sent out the enclosed article which intentionally titled "Pennsylvania House Education Committee approves bill to give auditory-oral preschool "approved" status--Bill has not yet become law". This article also appeared in the Health/Science newspaper section.

How ironic for the 50th bi-annual "National Association of the Deaf" (NAD) conference will be in the Keystone State at the same time as the Pennsylvania state legislature resorted to the eerie similar of the Milan Conference scenario!

The deaf printing instructor via Pennsylvania School for the Deaf (Philadelphia) wrote "An Ass and Horses" fable story under veiled response to the PSD's changing tune to the educational philosophy of educating the deaf students from the manualism to the oralism after the Milan Conference in 1880's.

The short story featured an ass (donkey) wandered into the mighty horses and brayed at them. Horses responded in neighs as acting more superior beings than an ass hirself. Horses told an ass that s/he ought to learn how to neigh (speak their own language). An ass practiced and managed to master the "neigh" sounds. An ass proudly walked to the presence of horses, but s/he stumbled into the braying sounds until finally neighed. Horses responded "That is very good of you, but you are not still one of us".

The current Pennsylvania state legislature claimed that the proposed means are to save a lot of $$$$. Really? Don't the state legislators read "Forbidden Signs: Campaign Against Sign Language" by Douglas Baylon what the manualism saved more state funding than the oralism.

From Baylon's book, the oral educational settings usually hired more teachers and speech specialists than the manualism due to just one teacher signed to the large number of students. The oral schools had to hire the speech therapist and teacher and bought the costly auditory equipments. The manualism just need the presence of sign language without any cost.

RADICAL FOUNDING FATHERS, McCONNELL

Mike McConnell aka the "Kolonut Pundit" posted his latest blog in definition of why some deaf activism from the Deaf Bilingual Coalition to the anti-AB 2072 activists would be according to his interpretation, technically defined as such an extremist group(s) within the Wiki enclosure.

Has Mike McConnell and Barry Sewell and Gloria Sutton and Russell the Deaf Bunny and the White Hood (Ghost) been familiar with the Founding Fathers - George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and other prestigious statesmen being the TRUE RADICALS?

THE FOUNDING FATHERS were pretty seen as such an extremists to denounce the Crown of England like the subtrean rebels (term from Paddy Ladd's "Deafhood") fighting back against the roots of AUDISM.

Mike McConnell and Barry Sewell would be seen as the Loyalists, the defenders of King George if they lived back in the 1770s. They defended the status quo and authority and wisdom within the Crown (Tony Mendoza and the California Coalition treating the deaf children as unlimited commodity and wealth). The Founding Fathers were seen as the true patriots for fighting back against the true tyranny of "government without direct representative." The deaf and parents of deaf children and babies stakeholder were out in the cold without being consulted and embraced for such a law being made without being properly represented within the government.

The AB 2072 opponents are seen as the true patriots and rebels against the system for imposing such unjustifiable means upon deaf children and babies. The Founding Fathers embraced the actions of rebellious behaviors from the Boston Tea Party to the concept of jury of their peers and lawful warrant and search.

Patrick Henry's memorable quote - "Give me Liberty, or give me Death!" which Mike McConnell and Barry Sewell ought to embrace the ideals of non-internventional government which the AB 2072 bill designated to be steering the emotionally vulnerable parents of deaf newborns and children to the government-approved agents - audiologists for their expertise of imposing biased and prejudiced referrals in conformity with their own ideals of what the deaf child and baby ought to be in the image of the status quo.

Impairments and impediments have differing effects on different people.

To some they are obstacles to be overcome, to others they are barriers. John Yeh always has traveled the higher but rougher road. His path brought him from obscurity and poverty in Taiwan--by way of Brazil in a cargo ship--to acclaim and fortune in the U.S.

His accomplishment--founding the high-tech company Integrated Microcomputer Systems and turning it into a multimillion-dollar enterprise--would be admirable in itself. But there's another dimension to his story that makes it more than admirable.

More than 12 percent of the 375 employees of IMS are either deaf or hard of hearing, and half of those with normal hearing use sign language--it's the best way for them to communicate with their boss, John Yeh, who is a deaf mute.When he told his story at a Congressional hearing in 1985, "there was a deadly silence in the committee hearing room," former Rep. Parren Mitchell (D., Md.) reported afterward to the House. He added, "The deadly silence was occasioned by Mr. John Yeh."

The indomitable Yeh, moving his hands in the swift, silent gestures of sign language, recounted to the gathered committee members his years of frustration and rejection until a government loan enabled him to go into business. The loan, obtained through a special program of the Small Business Administration (SBA), was the start of his success story--a success that went beyond the most quixotic dreams of his difficult youth.Born deaf from an unknown cause, he grew up in a succession of places in China and Taiwan, seemingly without much hope, shut off from all sound.

His older bother Joseph still recalls the day when the family moved from the Taiwanese countryside to a large city. The neighborhood children decided to test and tease the newcomer, then 10, by setting off a firecracker behind his back. Of course, the small deaf boy never heard the explosion.

The humiliation drew tears. How did John cope with the cruelty? Did he fight back? No, says Joseph, "John made friends with them."John learned patience and tolerance from his devout Christian parents. "Our parents accepted the deafness--it was God's will," says Joseph Yeh. "They believed children are a gift from God and that parents should do the best they can as stewards of this gift."Yu Yeh, a civil engineer, and his wife, Lin Yeh, had fled Mainland China for Taiwan with their children several years before Mao Zedong took over in 1949. Their other children, James, Joseph and Jeffry, have normal hearing; the two youngest, John and his sister, Fanny, are deaf.

Their parents resisted the urge to overprotect and treated all the children the same, except when it came to communication. Mother and son wrote notes back and forth. John's mother now knows sign language but still reverts to writing notes to him in Chinese and English.In search of the best education possible for their two deaf children, John's parents left Taiwan for Brazil in 1960. But their eyes, peering through the mists, were always upon America; like so many of the world's wayfarers, they hoped to reach the land of opportunity.

Joseph vividly remembers John, at 13, on the cargo boat from Hong Kong to Brazil. By the end of the month-long trip, John had not simply made friends with most of the crew--they treated him as an honorary deckhand.After two years of financial sacrifice and bureaucratic paperwork, the family finally settled in the U.S. in 1962. John Yeh arrived in America surrounded by a cocoon of awful silence. To break out of the cocoon and communicate with those around him, he had to learn two new languages: First, he had to learn to read and write English; then he had to learn to translate it into sign language. "I carried a Chinese-English dictionary with me everywhere," he recalls.

His determination paid off: John graduated from the Kendall School and then its affiliate, Gallaudet College. Both are in Washington, D.C., and were founded to educate the hearing-disabled. He earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics in 1971.

Despite his accomplishment, John found that doors were closed to him--the land of opportunity apparently offered opportunities only to those who could hear. "I was interested in becoming a mathematics teacher in high schools," he explained in sign language through an interpreter. "I was turned down. Some said because my English was weak, others said it was both my deafness and my English. If two people's skills are the same, they will choose the hearing person."Undaunted,

John Yeh resolved to slip away from the safe, familiar haunts of the deaf to try a more hazardous course. He enrolled in the master's degree program in computer science at the University of Maryland. "The university was very hard," John recalls. "I worked seven days a week on my studies. In those days, I had to find my own notetakers and interpreters." He got his degree and, soon after, his American citizenship papers.But still he found that prospective employers were unwilling to take a chance on him.

Because his three hearing brothers already were established in the computer field and John's grades were good, he had expected to find a job fairly quickly. "I sent out hundreds of applications for jobs," he recalls. "I either didn't get a response or was turned down. Many didn't feel comfortable with me. Many didn't know how to work with the deaf. I tried for a year to get a job."In the end, reluctantly, he retreated to the world he knew--the world of Gallaudet College, where he worked for five years as the school's computer programmer. But he didn't let go of his hope for something more.By the late '70s, John decided that only way a deaf mute could succeed in business was to start his own company. He asked his brothers to help him in setting up a new company to develop computer software--an idea the brothers had kicked around for several years. "We said, 'If you really want to do it, we'll support you,'"

Joseph Yeh recalls. John's struggle, of course, was just beginning. Every bank rejected his loan application, despite his parents' offer to put up their home as collateral. Then he heard about the Small Business Administration Handicapped Assistance Loan Program. To be eligible, he needed three rejection letters from banks: He got all three letters in one day.John applied for the special program and in the meantime taught himself accounting and business management through SBA workshops and books borrowed from the library.

In 1979, the persevering Yeh got a $100,000 loan at 3 percent interest from SBA. Integrated Microcomputer Systems was born.For the first year, John Yeh took no salary from the company. He relied on his wife, Mary, who is also deaf, to support him and their family on her income as a teacher of the deaf. Hard work, long hours and other federal programs have helped John build the company from two paid employees to nearly 400.Today, the company, situated in Rockville, Md., specializes in software development, telecommunications, office automation and systems engineering. John's brothers are company vice presidents, and his sister Fanny, woks as coordinator between the hearing and deaf employees and teaches sign language.

Revenues totaled $21 million last year, and revenues of $28 million to $30 million are projected for 1988. IMS also has captured multimillion-dollar contracts from the Army, the Navy and the Justice Department.What distinguishes IMS from hundreds of other computer companies? It's the small touches: An employee asking a colleague for a cup of coffee in sign language even though both can speak and hear; the 4-inch plaster statue of three hands signing "IMS"; the company's special project to connect deaf people to the hearing world through personal computers that translate telephone voices.

Nine years after his company's inception, John Yeh, at age 41, still puts in a 70-hour work week, keeps his office door open to all employees and reinvests most of the profits in IMS. He also still lives in the same housing development where his parents, brothers and sister have made their home since coming to the U.S.

For relaxation, he spends time with his wife and their three children. they have two daughters--Mei Ling-Hi, 10, and Ming Hui-Chung, 8--the first born deaf, the second with Down's syndrome. Their 4-year-old son, Jason Tai-Wei, is hard of hearing.When Yeh testified before the House Small Business Committee in 1985, he said he was "certain" that he would not have been able to start of to expand his company without SBA's help.Recently, he encountered an officer of a bank who had turned him down for a loan. "I told him about my business," Yeh says. "His expression showed shock. He was surprised we had grown."John Yeh has a demeanor of great gravity. He takes matters seriously and is careful not to offend. But he can't suppress a smile as he remembers the look on the bank officer's face.[End article]

Will we see more vigorous efforts to weed out the sexual predators within the education of the deaf and residential facilities of the deaf on the way? That should be the way!

SENATOR GLORIA ROMERO: Thank you, Madam Chair. I have looked at this bill and I am urging the--I'd like to urge the Assemblyman to consider the amendments and to adopt the amendments that have been brought forward by the opposition.

Madam chair, I appreciate the work of the committee, some of these I think I can share, but others I do have concerns about. As a psychologist and educator myself, I do think that it sends--intended or not--an unintended consequence that by moving this out of Department of Education into DDS [Department of Developmental Services], it clearly establishes this in the medical model. If we keep it within the Department of Education, I think it reaffirms that language is learned. And in looking at American Sign Language, this is not just a popular language, this is the third most popular language in this country.

[Applause]

SEN. ROMERO (cont.): I think it is--

SEN. ALQUIST [to audience]: Excuse me, we will have no clapping. The sergeants are here. We will have it quiet, so we can all [pause] understand what is going on. Thank you very much.

SEN. ROMERO: So as I approach--and as I have learned quite a bit from both the opponents and proponents, and from mothers who I know in my own life--the question that I start with asking is: [pause] What are we trying to fix? That's the question that I have to ask: What are we trying to fix? Are we trying to fix deafness? And I would have to answer--if that is the question, then I would say: No. [pause] Because, American Sign Language is a language--maybe one that maybe many of us are not familiar with, but it is a language. It's recognized. And if we start from the premise of asking: What are we trying to fix? then I would have to ask: How far are we willing to go? Are we going to fix gay children? Are we going to fix dark-skinned infants and give brochures to parents saying: "This is how you can bleach skin"? Are we going to fix the curl of the hair?--I mean, I must honestly ask this question, because I think these are some of the concerns. And I'm not saying it's intended in this bill, but if we're talking about fixing, those are questions, even in the history of this state, that I think--look at this beautiful mural [gesturing], but there's another mural that we could perhaps paint of California.

So that's the question: What are we trying to fix? [pause] In terms of looking at the amendments--and that's what I fundamentally believe that by moving it to DDS it clearly establishes it in the medical model in need of fixing something, as opposed to the Department of Education, which maintains that this is a linguistic skill, ability and opportunity to continue to oversee. I think, just a--So I would ask the author [gesturing to Assemblymember Mendoza] to consider that [gesturing to the Chair] and the Chair as well, my views.

In terms of the question of the audiologist, I do believe that this is an inherent financial conflict of interest, and I would not feel comfortable by having the audiologist, with a clear financial interest, to be the gatekeeper to parents for information on issues related to hearing.

In terms of--I mean, there's other issues as well that we can raise--The advisory committee that's been proposed I think is balanced and fair, from the opponents. I would ask us to look at that, but I go back to that fundamental question [said with emphasis]: I do not understand what we are trying to fix.

And it does become a question of understanding and embracing the culture of deafness, a language which exists, a language which is the third most popular in this country--a language which I've tried to learn, in fact, as well, and haven't been good at it. So I would ask the author, I appreciate your efforts. I understand, I think [gesturing toward Assemblymember Mendoza] good intentions in bringing this forward, but I am compelled by the [arguments of the] opposition--and would ask you to consider adopting the amendments that have been offered by the opposition.

Surreal Incident with Deaf Latino and Rep. Mendoza

What a surreal experience for the AB 2072 opponent bumped into Rep. Tony Mendoza at the Pyramid Brewery restuarant after the hearing! That was Elena Ruiz, deaf Latino clicked very well with Rep. Mendoza and chatted for awhile. Mendoza felt connected with Elena due to their similar ethnic hertiage. Politics surely make a strange bedfellow!

Ruiz we were all gathered at pyramid brewery, and it just so happened that mendoza came in with a troupe of his own. thanks to sharing a pitcher of IPA beer with some friends, i felt bold enough to wave to him-- apparently, he recognized me from last week when i passed by him on the street wearing my yellow anti-ab 2072 shirt, shooting him a haughty look. so he came over to me, shook my hand, and we started chatting.after introducing myself as a Latina Deaf woman with parents in the field of bilingual (Spanish-English education,) I was really blunt to him. i told him i felt he was letting down us Latino Deaf people, and that he was contributing to the oppression of us. I told him that his bill reminded me of Prop 227, and he instantly said "i'd never do that, i'd never do that." i also said that i hope we all can work together to make sure that Latino Deaf children dont have to have hearing aids on their ears or stuff implanted on their skull to feel like complete human beings, that they can be ASL users and still be a total part of both the hearing Latino community and the Deaf community. He kept agreeing with everything I said. Then I went on to ask if he had had a change of heart today, and he said yes and that he really wanted to work with us. the convo was prob around 10-15 mins long, and it was photographed and videotaped. i'm sure i'm leaving some more details out, but those are definitely the big points...thank god for that IPA buzz for giving me the ganas to do that.

In response to the deaf naysayers on the issue of the AB 2072 legislative bill. The naysayers ought to read the 2009 non-fiction book - "Intelligence and How to Get It - Why Schools and Cultures Count by Richard E. Nisbelt which Jim Holt, the New York Times Book Review editor called the book "A meticulous and eye-opening critique of hereditarianism.

This book is also supported by the National Science Foundation and other scientific thinktanks.

Was Bill Gate Greatly Influenced By Deaf People?

Not many people realize how much the deaf presence greatly influenced Bill Gates' own destiny of revolutionizing the computer data information transmitted over the telephone line. Gates got fascinated with the text transmission from the acoustic amplifier to the teletype known as the TTY (teletypewriter) from another teletype machine (formerly used as a rapid telegram machine for the newspaper bureaus and other media outlets). Gates saw the TTY machine and asked someone to demonstrate how it works. Gates examined the acoustic amplifier and got an idea about the future of data information highway over the telephone lines.

Bill Gates and another co-founder of the early Micro-soft (before it turned into today's Microsoft) sold the BASIC computer programming to the IBM (International Business Machine) company with sizable numbers of deaf employees with expertise in cold data processing. The IBM company was very prestigious company of its time which many people want to be hired by this very same company with excellent salaries and prestige. The IBM got stumbled in the 80s by the personal computer revolution.

Stanley Kubrick, the film director, had the hidden message about the IBM being the likely monopoly and corporate dominant within the everyday life in "Space Odyssey 2001" classic 1960s science fiction film. The villainous character in "2001" was the HAL, the computer mainframe controlled everything in the space station. HAL was subtly coded as IBM without getting any earful lawsuits from the very powerful corporation of its time. Let's deconstruct HAL after every letter = H (I), A (B) and L (M). The HAL really stood for the IBM.

Why said the cold data processing? It was an opposite to the "off the hot press" known as the time-consuming Linotype dealt with hot metal iron case to print something. The cold data processing became the nowadays' word processing (WP) in many personal computers.

After viewing the ABC-TV's "This Week" television interview with Bill Gates, the founder of "Microsoft". Gates apparently used more hand gestures than usual for any hearing Americans.

The use of hand gestures during interviews or political speeches and social conversations usually done by many Europeans, but Bill Gates was not raised in Europe or lived in Europe. Adolf Hitler of Germany was one of the fine example of hearing person overly used hand gestures along with his speech ramblings.

New "Non-Fiction" Book on Deaf Serial Killer

Many former students at the Maryland School for the Deaf (MSD) in Frederick, MD, had the recollections of troubling young deaf Patrick McCullough with his frequent and violent outbursts at the residential advisors or houseparents and school staffers. The new book had many former MSD students pretty surprised to see the former alta mater being the feature subject of the book like a serial killer.

RLMDEAF like to point out the general definition of "abuse" have multiple meanings from physical abuse to negligence/mistreatment. That could be the verbal abuse to emotional abuse to mental abuse.

NO,NO, NO to the Unacceptable Ploy of the AB 2072 Amendment!

Candy, the blogger really have NO clues what the National Institute Health's Center on Deafness and Communication Disorders (NICD) is very audistic (A U D I S T / A U D I S M) and largely focused on the PATHOLOGICAL view of deaf people to fix their hearing loss. Why should the state education agency refer parents of newborn deaf babies to the NICD website with complicated written language? Not all the parents have the Internet access at all or not know how to? The NCID website and the agency itself view as anti-DEAF. No argument!

What the F*CK Candy is talking about??????? Mendoza as fair and balanced assembly person??? He did write the legislative bill without any kind of inputs from the deaf community and dismissed any concerns or attempts to work together among the deaf community.

Candy is totally wrong which Mendoza have nothing to do with the amendment to the AB 2072. That is the California State Senate's Health Committee's doings from one of the member to amend the bill with some provision as part of ploy and deceptive tactics.

Many deaf people said publicly that they are the real experts on deaf people themselves as compared to audiologists spending only two years on the ontology functions of the human ear.

Too many audiologists NEVER MEET real culturally deaf individuals and see the real superiority of American Sign Language (ASL)

Moreover, Candy should not give such an unqualified and untrained referrals to that parent of newborn deaf baby with attached links. That's what Candy done is real criminal since she should not give any kind of biased information like "watch out for the ASL extremists". No such thing like the ASL extremists!

We ought to ask ourselves who is really "Candy"? Why hide behind the alias name or not disclose the full name and picture?? It's a time for the dysfunctional audists to show their real faces and full name!
