  3. My 10-year-old deaf child with cochlear implants in both ears has better grammar than what I read here. That should tell you something. Cochlear implants take away the struggle of learning English. They take away the struggle of learning to speak clearly. They have opened up my son's world. Ask him if he'd rather not hear at all and he will say, "Never." It's like asking a hearing person if they'd like to stop hearing.

  4. To Anonymous,

As a non-expert, you are making a huge mistake.

You need to understand the meaning of "global language proficiency." Robert reads and writes English as a second language, so he makes trivial mistakes, but he has a deep conceptual understanding--a type of deep understanding that your son might never achieve if you put limits on your son and forbid him learning ASL.

You need to learn the difference between BICS and CALP. CLICK HERE to read about it.

It's very important that you, as parent, understand that your child does not have *full access* to the auditory information. This is extremely important to understand. However, your child DOES have full access to visual information. This means that ASL can provide him with normal, cognitive, linguistic development.

If you do not understand these distinctions, your child will grow up and function as a handicapped person. However, if you provide him the opportunity to be exposed to ASL, he can develop normally and have thinking and communications skills at a non-handicapped level.

  5. PS To anonymous,

I see you were probably referring to the comment above yours. You shouldn't judge a person by their skill in a second language. You should judge them by their skill in their first language.

This person's problems with English grammar is not an issue of ASL v. oral learning, but it's simply an issue of a problem with the educational system he/she was raised under. If he/she had been raised under a true bilingual method, then this person would be much more fluent in English.
