Director Joseph Sargent repeatedly instructed Actress Marlee Matlin not to open her lips while signing to capture the accurate and pure ASL use for this telemovie. The director and the film making crew had to edit several scenes with Matlin and frequently panned the scenes to Jeff Daniels. The film making crew with the director's instruction to avoid the filming of Matlin's lip movements to be consistent with the given script and storyline.
Director Sargent pointed out Matlin's "hard to break" habits of moving lips and signing at the same time. Real impressive with Sargent's artistic determination to bring the balanced and realistic portrayal of culturally deaf person for tonight's CBS telemovie - "Sweet Nothing in My Ear" without resorting to typical and confused image of deaf people. *waving hands*
The remaining question about the byline title of Post's TV Week periodical - Sound Judgment following the word composition of Marlee Matlin, Jeff Daniels Star in "Sweet Nothing in My Ear". Why write "Sound Judgment"? What the Washington Post meant by that byline title?
Let's see tonight's telemovie and find out if the television reviewer make the sense with this byline title - "Sound Judgment". What is to do with very emotional issue about cochlearizing deaf child thru the use of so-called sound judgment? How can it be the sound judgment if the Jeff Daniels character simply want to see his own son leading the normal life by having the ability to hear. What about the pros and cons of cochlear implant surgery on deaf child? No such thing like "sound judgment"! Purely emotional decision to make!
Is the Washington Post's TV Week editorial team being irony or what?
Here is the link to the Washington Post's TV Week review of "Sweet Nothing in My Ear" telemovie -
or type www.washingtonpost and type "Jeff Daniels" on the enclosed search for Kathy Blumenstock.
Too many deaf people in DC area expressed sigh about not able to watch "Desperate Housewives" new tv epsiode. Also want to see tonight's PBS telemovie - "My Boy Jack" with actor Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter).

There's a rule that anyone using ASL shouldn't use lip movements? I wouldn't know that.
ReplyDeleteLane just totally echoed my thoughts.
ReplyDeleteI have to superglue my lips each time I sign? Oh bummer.
no no no you dont have to
ReplyDeleteMarlee opens her mouth and it looks like a cow eating hay in the AM, tongue and all
keep it smaller, normal looking for TELEVISION
What the director wanted mouth movement, meaning-sensitive, not yawling
wanna hear the truth? well, marlee matlin looks like a
ReplyDeletecow chewing when she speaks.
not normal like a hearing person's lip movement.
sorreee to offend you but
that's the truth. understand
what i mean?
How interesting about your post and the comments. I can understand that the movie directers wanted to make it look best. I like your post ,and it's something we don't know about! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI thought the movie was terrible. Why is it when deaf people appear on tv or film those days, they have to OVERACT. I mean MM was going into some serious hardcore ASL soliloquies during some of the most unimaginable times. In the middle of the courtroom? during a fight? why cant hollywood ever let deaf people talk like normal deaf people. I'm just sick of the whole ASLASLASLASL angle. I mean there were 15 words for every sign. I thought the movie really portrayed asl as an watered down monkey language. it offended me on a level.
ReplyDeleteLane and Deaf-Blind Musings,
ReplyDeleteI am totally agree with both of us that would be unlikely realistic for deaf people to keep their lips close during the entire ASL conversations.
Director Sargent want to portray the culturally deaf person in realistic manner which the handfuls of deaf people hardly move their lips and engaged in ASL.
Actress Marlee Matlin admitted that she tend to mouth the English words and ASL at the same time.
Anyone deaf mouthed the English word EVERY TIME that would undermine the eloquence and fluidity of ASL itself as a language.
Many educators of the deaf usually confuse the deaf kids with the use of lip movement with ASL at the same time.
Lip movements along with ASL greatly distract deaf kids from largely focused on the visual language (ASL).
The presence of Signed English, LOVE and Pidgin Sign English (Language Contact now) already disrupted the once-eloquent ASL use and caused more and more deaf kids to be juxaposted with all confusions what they were supposed to absorb the learning thru simple means.
The English language is largely an audiotry language for reading and writing.
ASL is perfectly desginated for the visual communication with their own grammar structure and rules.
Yes, there are many lip movements coming with the ASL as part of non-manual features different from the English word mouthings.
Deaf adults and children of deaf parents seems tend to lessen their lip movements and non-manual features than other deaf people with hearing parents.
That's what Director Joseph Sargent wanted MM to portray the deaf adult of deaf parents, not being herself.
MM had done brillantly in her performance as the deaf adult of deaf parents in "Nothing Sweet in My Ear" telemovie.

Anonymous #1 and #2,
ReplyDeleteYou told your piece in mockery of MM. You had the right to express your thoughts.
MM had done brilliantly on her performance as a deaf of deaf adults (DODA) in "Nothing Sweet in My Ear".
MM did not open her lips much in last night's telemovie. What make you perceive MM open hir lips like a cow? From other television interviews or "Dancing with the Stars" tv show?
We have to understand that MM got her education in the public school as part of the Total Communication philsophy. What could we do?
Some individuals privately emailed me about your hurtful comments toward MM.

Finding the right sports books and bookmakers to use for your arbitrage sports betting can be a daunting task with the internet now they are everywhere. The list of crooked bookmaking sites that have helped part people with their money and robbed them of their winnings grows longer every day. Being enlightened about this all sports bettors should do their due diligence before signing up with any bookmaker and be sure of their reputation as well as their guarantees on return of winnings. Almost all sports betting sites will have reviews so read them before making your decision on which one you go with.
ReplyDeleteFinally, to insure that you do indeed have the best betting odds that you can get, it is crucial as a bettor to shop the money line and the odds. Any reputable sports book online would offer the best line for your wagers without coercion. However, once you have found the best deal, it is important to verify and scrutinize the odds based on the past performance of the particular teams involved you can make appropriate judgments that can be indicative of the weaknesses and strengths of the respective sporting teams. You should also do research on the sports players, injury lists, and the teams if possible.

With this movement the United States has taken a different approach to online gambling. Whereas other countries are working with these services to regulate them, the United States is attempting to prohibit them once and for all. By doing this they are missing out on the ability to tax internet gambling instead of getting rid of it entirely. Conservative estimates have shown that taxing these services could make the government in upwards of $6 billion a year.
The important thing to note here is that neither of the above approaches is "systemised", although those in the first group believe that they are limiting losses while increasing their winning chances. But what the majority in that first group generally do not take proper account of is how the Bookies have fixed the odds to ensure that they, the Bookies, will come out on top in the long run. What this means is that if you only bet on "favourites" you will eventually lose all your money, although it is true that you will enjoy a much longer period of betting before you kiss your last buck goodbye!
