"Biological Weapon" Scare at Gallaudet University

There was the "biological weapon" scare at Gallaudet University this Wednesday morning at the North Ballard dormitory which found later to be the plant food for growing marijuana in the undisclosed empty dormitory room. The Gallaudet Physical Plant Department (PPD) done their regular heating/AC cleaning tasks and found those chemical containers and heat lamps and called upon the FBI agents, DC Metropolitan Police, bomb squad technicians and firefighters.

The Washington Post newspaper accurately defined this incident to be the "chemical scare".

300 Gallaudet students had to be evacuated from both Ballard dormitories. The heightened concerns about the possibility of chemical/biological attacks due to the seventh anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks across the country.

  1. There is no proof these items are used for marjuana growing. It was just a speculation :)

It's good that Gallaudet employees were vigilant... DC and approaching the 9/11 anniversary. This should reassure the parents that their kids are in good hands.

  2. Just reported what other people made speculation out of the fertilizer canisters. :)

Yea, you are absolutely right about the Gallaudet's timely responses.

How odd for someone to store the chemical canisters and heat lamp in empty dormitory rooms. CRE??

Hardly a good advert for the world's one and only deaf and pioneering university. Gally has its critics already....

  6. MM, are you implying that Deaf students should be different from their hearing peers? It has nothing to do with the academic status of the university itself. Every school, even the best of the ivy league universities like Harvard and Yale, has its share of 'rogue' students.

To be fair to Gallaudet, all the talk about marijuana cultivation are mere speculations. We don't know what the real purpose of these ingredients. The student, perhaps one majoring in botany, may not have enough room in the dorm and found these air ducts handy storage space. Let's not denounce Gallaudet based on speculations. :)

  7. Terrible scene at Gally...Shame on PPD employees. Remember that PPD are hearing workers. They don't know sign language. Better fire them and put new employees who are Deaf and know ASL and Deaf Culture. Stupid of them. Stop to be passive with hearing workers, please. Wish to tell Robert Davila to remove all hearings from PPD. Deaf staffs and students feel embarrassed that media taking looking inside the Gally.

  8. Nothing to do with Hearing or Deaf issue. There was an incident in Boston. The intelligent mentally unstabled woman who worked at the MIT lab brought the stuffs home near the State House building. (Only one block away!) The strange odor was floating around in the apartment building. Eventually the woman was caught in her own apartment and brought into the ER for the Psych evaluation. The woman was very isolated from the outside community. I don't think she was being charged for this. Sometimes things go wrong.

I miss the name of both dorms -- Krug and Cogswell Halls. Sigh .. At least everyone is safe and sound.
