The ABC-TV's popular network television, "Desperate Housewives" done such an offensive mockery toward deaf people in the #20 episode of Season Six - "Epiphany". The alcoholic single mother mocked her own teenage son for being thankful about not dating anyone deaf, blind and crippled and snided at him for wooing the daughter of Republican caterer out of his league. That son turned turned into a male teenage serial killer at the fictional Wisteria Lane. http://www.tv.com/desperate-housewives/epiphany/episode/1335656/summary.html?tag=ep_guide;summary
Why Marc Cherry, the writer of "Desperate Housewives" thought that way about deaf people being undesirable for being dated with? Cherry wrote the hilarous and memorable part for deaf actress Marlee Matlin for the Season Three - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sdhXmLtBLQY
What turned the writer into the anti-deaf or "hate crime" against deaf people?

I think the fact that such a comment made the character nasty was the point. The writer is creating a characteristic family. The family is composed of opportunistic snobs. Seems realistic to me. It's not an attitude people are supposed to fall in love with!
ReplyDeleteI think there are other ways to make a character look nasty than to belittle the deaf and blind and crippled. This writer and the producers should have known better.
