The Archie Comics will feature the FIRST gay character in its comic book series to be more inclusive within the changing world. WHAT abbbbbbbbouuut DEAF character(s) as part of the Riverdale gang???

How come didn't DEAF characters being seen as true marketable for comic books or tv shows?
Speaking of true deaf characters, not being just the token character(s).
More and more comic books featured the GLBT people as superheroes or leading character like "Johnny Hex" and "Batgirl". Please check out the list of LGBT superheroes/heroines and villains /villainesses http://heroesnhunks.com/wordpress/category/lgbt-in-comics/

Deaf kids surely need the "superhero" role models in comic books!! Don't you agree?
Some comic books or graphic novels already feature deaf characters -http://www.slideshare.net/sharonpajkawest/presentation-deaf-comic-book-characters-presentation

Why not do it first by yourself, huh?
ReplyDeleteAnonymous,
ReplyDeleteThat would be real nice if I am currently employed with the comic book industry or television production development team.
I will take your suggestion into consideration.
Many thanks for your idea of creative employment. :)

There is a "SuperDeafy" character
ReplyDeleteToby,
ReplyDeleteYou see that I am well-immeresed and informed in the Deaf World, but never seen the SuperDeafy character.
I am speaking of the mainstream comic book industry or tv show not showing any deaf character as part of the regular storyline.
I do not like the SuperDeafy character very much after viewing the vlog posting by the Deaf Nation.
I am more interested in the mainstream comic books/tv shows feature deaf characters in equal sense, not just the guest spots.
Thanks for leaving your comment. I learn something new about the SuperDeafy stuff. :)

Hey Robert, my daughter watches a cartoon called Penguins of Madagascar and there is a deaf character in that show and he signs too, really cute and the signs are very realistic ASL, sometimes SEE.
ReplyDeleteYes, Bobby! I had seen the Madsgascar animated film which one of the monkeys signed in sign language after my ex-hearing lover recommended it to me.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the reminder and recommendation! :)
Echo (Maya Lopez) is a super-heroine in the Marvel Universe - she originally used the name Ronin and a padded suit to appear male.

She was a member of the New Avengers.
Your post made me curious so I did a little digging for deaf characters in comic books and oddly enough Archie Comics was the first item I found... An unrealistic (by today's standards) Life with Archie #119 (March 1972) featured a story about Archie teaching a young deaf girl named Stella to lipread.
ReplyDeletehttp://deafness.about.com/cs/culturefeatures2/a/deafcomics.htm
Stella is not the positive portrayal that Maya Loepz (Echo) is. Stella is more damsel in distress for Archie's ginger knight.
I found one other off the top of my head: Tony Mantegna - a deaf AND gay character who was a member of the second incarnation of DC's Secret Six.
I agree. We should ALL take a page from Seasame Street.(Speaking of which, I miss Linda VERY MUCH).I am a HUGE Archie fan but I never knew about Stella.(Tyrannical Audists).I am speaking but I believe that to be wrong.Do you how to contact the publishers to protest?

ReplyDeleteThis is good summary on several deaf characters on comics and others. Seems mostly are minor characters.
Check it out!
